He's been seen day in day out by multiple head coaches who don't rate him. He has been loaned out to multiple clubs that never try and sign him at the end of the agreement. We give loads of young lads a chance. Sometimes someone just isn't good enough.
Seems to me there might be some issues with him and his application whilst here would be my guess. He's not been given a run in the side, that's right. He's looked good whilst out on loan to other teams, that's right. Three managers we've had here have failed to give him an opportunity of a solid run of games, why? My bet would be that we're delving into the realms of attitude and application. He might not like it here, therefore doesn't appear to give his all. He likes it at Burton, so applies himself. I don't know, I'm just guessing of course. But if I had to put money on it, it'll be something to do with attitude and application whilst here that's held him back. Is it a conscious choice from the player? No idea. Like I say, some people just don't settle at certain clubs and in certain environments. This might just be one of those times. Clearly there's something beyond just "ability", because he has ability.
As I alluded to in a previous reply, and only on the limited data available, he seems very similar to Lofthouse and that to me is the mystery. He's only a year younger and he's played less games at a lower level. As you say, he's got experience of playing right back in the National League but so has Lofthouse - who's even played slightly more games in that position. It's also interesting that the Salford right back is Tom Edwards (who's still only 26). He's not signed yet, and I'm not writing him off, especially without seeing him play. The underlying data might say he's going to be the League One Cafu - I hope so, but I'm not fully convinced on this one (if indeed it happens). On the plus side, his yellow card consumption is pretty impressive though I don't think Luca will like being usurped in that department.
The fact he's played a decent number of games at CB and is a lot taller and more physical than Lofthouse suggests to me he's very different to Lofthouse and what we need. No one would have been playing him CB if he's defensively really poor and far better attacking wise like Lofthouse or Cotter etc. None of those would ever be played CB. It would be a disaster. The fact he can do that, as well as play RB/RWB and he effective there to me shows he is far more rounded than what we already have.
I have obviously never seen him play but I've seen a few write ups from Salford fans etc. And all been super positive. There are also a load of clips about online and he looks a proper player. I know clips can make a lot of players look good but I do have a good feeling about this one. Should suit what conor needs on that right hand side perfectly.
Could it be anything to do with the fact that these days head coaches are 3 or 4 bad results away from the sack.
Important to remember that Hourihane has had 10 games last season and a pre-season to assess his squad. I don't know what the actual expectancy levels are. Maybe that adds pressure. Who knows?
