Don't think anyone expects us to be up there competing really and for them to come out and actually admit defeat wouldn't exactly be the best thing to do in my opinion.
I wouldn’t see it as accepting defeat. I would see it as the start of a movement, on which the club & supporters get behind the team together, a proper short term plan for a longer term gain. At the minute the relationship between the club & supporters is at an all time low. This club works best when we’re all working together, with total transparency between the club & supporters. At the minute it’s anything but. The club are acting amateurish in every department.
Better to sign no-one than waste our money and burden the club with vast quantities more s**** Much as MDG as a starting right-back horrifies me, less haste, more speed.
I’m making the trip on Saturday, but I don’t fancy us. Wouldn’t be any different if we had an influx of new signings. We rarely turn up for the first game if it’s away from Oakwell. Highly likely we will also tow our bags out in the league cup against lower league opponents. It’s frustrating that we are a creature of habit, but it’s also the reason I won’t get involved in the blame game that will inevitably follow defeat, if/when it comes at Plymouth. You’re either a flapper (in relation to X) or you’re not I suppose. Doesn’t mean you care any less - I rarely post on Facebook or X these days. There are no winners.
Teams have done it on lower budgets than us. Money guarantees nothing. It's up to the coaches to get the best out of what we have and coming in. You appear to be in the defeatist group. (Worked with many), I prefer to be an optimist until things turn. results over a period will determine that. How many gave us a chance in 2016. Not me when we reached November. Fact. On paper we still have a decent squad. Add to the defence and who knows. Everyone is frustrated we haven't signed a Right back. We can only hope. (As does Connor. But I'd want him to give the nod) I certainly don't want to settle for mid table.B4 the season even starts. That's not the way to bring fans in. (Admit a rebuild whilst losing money gior) And I'm pretty sure Connor doesn't. He has laid the ground bringing in some decent looking players to boost the squad. Got rid of non performers eg Cosgrove and Watters. With others to follow if they can get fixed up elsewhere. As for X (Twatter) closed that many moons ago. The looneys have taken over.
I don’t know what people are expecting , when you are cutting the women’s team to save what is probably the equivalent of a tank of diesel for the first team coach , you know financially we’re in trouble . I’m surprised they get anyone to come here .
Just to be clear, you think the best way for the club's owners to strengthen relationships with the fans is for them to come out and say that we've no chance of promotion?
And what would you (and others) say if there was a communication from the board saying we're consolidating for a few years and don't expect being around the playoffs? They'd get hammered, is the obvious answer. In an indirect way they have sort of said it. They can't subsidise things as much, they've closed down the women's team (great timing) and all our signings so far have been free or loans. It doesn't take a genius to understand what's happening.
I imagine the plan will have to be to play MDG as a right back if we are playing a back four - and whilst that is frightening, it is less so than him being a centre back in a two, lets face it… McGoldrick is a 9, a proper centre forward - though is also probably the best footballer we have to play as a 10 as well - he’s more game intelligent and a better passer of the ball than DKD - and that isn’t an attack on DKD at all who I think is great. Questions remain over DMs legs due to his age but we saw with the assist the other day that there are few doubts over his footballing ability. Good signing. We’ve brought in a couple of decent wingers. A left back. All needed. We are yet to sell anyone of any real significance - you’d imagine that might change in the coming weeks. That might be the stumbling block on incomings. I’m no less hopeful for the season than I was a couple of months ago. If anything the squad is stronger at this stage than I expected even without a single right back - but I don’t think what we have now is what we’ll have in September. I just can’t see all of Russell, Phillips, Connell and DKD all still being at the club.
Re DeGevigney. Chronicle article interviewing Hourihane effectively stating if we're playing a back 4, DeGevigney won't be playing as a centre half. But thinks he'd be a very good right back.
That really worries me if Conor thinks Mael can be a first choice right back. His positional sense has always been poor. Saw enough at Harrogate to suggest he’ll struggle. Time and again he got pulled inside and left acres of space on the left flank.
People are under estimating the amount of change this pre season, and what's achievable. Our squad - before Mladen came in - was built for 5 at the back. Duff played it, Collins inherited it as did Clarke. So we ended up with players for that. We've now decided a change of manager and change of style so the squad isn't set up for. I think we've done pretty well to offload quite a lot of players who haven't had much of an impact. To assume we can do everything we wanna do after a couple of years of poor recruitment and with the financial situation we're in. Patience, innit.
Maybe he doesn't think he can play their either, but given he doesn't have a right back is putting a positive spin on it for now. Interesting how he's been quite strong in his wording about not seeing him as a centre half.
