Not really. I don’t see him being shy of hard work, and as I already pointed out on another post, he’s had this lot in to assess their fitness prior to pre season training starting, and the hard miles. I can only go on how fit they look compared to last season, and how he said ‘there was more determination about the coaching’ Must say I felt a bit hoodwinked believing Conor would play, but in hindsight, I’d sooner have what we’ve got now, and I’m not sure we’d have got McGoldrick through the door - maybe not even Vickers, who seems to be a level above.
IMHO you're being way too harsh. I don't think it's a case of 'I can't be arsed with this playing and training malarkey, so I'll have a go at coaching '. It's that he found coaching so enjoyable that the thing he used to do that he thought he loved started to feel like a chore in comparison. I've been in a similar (albeit considerably less glamorous) position. The last time I moved departments at work, I didn't really want to go. I'd worked really hard on something, and that thing had evolved into something really good. I liked my colleagues, I liked my job, I enjoyed going to work. But after a couple of days I never looked back. I loved the new thing I was working on, loved the department I was now in, and the few times after that when I helped out in my old department, it felt like a chore. Conor is just trying to get across how much he loves being a coach. To the point where the thing he did for all his life prior to that, the thing he wanted to do since being a kid, was no longer enjoyable in comparison.
I get that but he signed in June. How much coaching did he do for us before pre-season started for him to come into pre-season with the mindset that he didn't want to do the hard work for pre-season?
I don't think he came into it thinking that. I think he quickly found, in the first few days of being both a player and a coach, that it was the coaching that was exciting him.
F*** it, sack him for pulling the wool over everybody's eyes. We should build a team around Nikwali, he seems like a good laiker.
I think the belief that he never came here to play came from us having lots of players who play the same position. Connell was the obvious starter but then Russell had only played as a sitting midfielder for us up until early last season. We also signed Nwakali & Craig so the Hourihane signing didn’t make sense. Having said that we also had too many centre backs & right wing backs but not enough left wing backs & forwards so it was probably just incompetence from Sormaz but it certainly fuelled the talk that there was never an intention for Hourihane to play games.
I was one of the ones who was (and still am) bothered about his inexperience. He's done superbly in this window, though, despite all. He's a brainy lad, though, and I expect he'll come good when things are going rough, cos that's where experience is vital. If he doesn't lose his head when we've gone through a losing patch then he's big manager material.
I can't be arsed looking for it but I remember(maybe incorrectly) when he signed during an interview Conor stated he wouldn't play much and that coaching was his passion and much of his time would be concentrated on that part of his "hybrid role" so I can't understand the bairnin' around him packing in playing. The fanfare around his return was driven by the club not the man himself.........sithi.
