Bradford away is likely to be absolutely immense, and a match that I really would quite like to attend. Therefore, you can only imagine my dismay when I realised I've somehow managed to arrange a family jaunt to Bournemouth that weekend. We're supposed to be going to stay with an old friend who's been inviting us down for ages, and has been going through a hard time lately. I have quite a few people relying on me, as I'm supposed to be driving my wife and daughter, plus my wife's sister and her small daughter. So if I were to pull out, I'd be letting down four family members, plus a friend. However, I really really REALLY want to go to Bradford v Barnsley. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I love my club but I love my family more. There’s no way I’d let people down in the scenario you describe for a match. Especially when it’s not even a cup final or last game of the season for automatics. The family might forgive you or be happy to make other arrangements but you can’t go back on your friend who’s having a tough time.
I was actually hoping for some advice about how I could make it to the match without upsetting anyone too much! However, you are all of course absolutely correct.
It's a long shot, but when I was in a similar position for the Spurs cup game in March 1999 I prayed for snow. Apologies to anyone who had to miss the rearranged fixture as a result of my selfishness.
Right, here goes. It's elaborate, but the only way I can think of for you to have your cake and eat it, so to speak. Half 2, say you need to 'pop out' for bread/milk/Toblerone etc. Whatever takes your fancy. For £14, you can get some VR goggles which you can put your phone in from Amazon. Pop off down the road to Christchurch FC. They've got a home game that day vs Millbrook FC. Get a VPN on your phone, hop over to 'Switzerland' or wherever, so you can get the game on. Take a seat at Christchurch, and pop the VR headset on. The raucous atmosphere at the Hurn Bridge Sports Ground I'm sure will fill in for Valley Parade. When the game is done, rejoin your family, and make some excuse about roadworks for your delay in bringing home the bacon/cake/soap powder etc. Best of luck.
Get thi sen to valley parade if they love you they will understand. Just for balance you understand I would never get away with that. Seriously though does Bournemouth have to be that weekend could it be switched one before or after maybe. Anyway if not Bournemouth not a bad place to spend a weekend one of my happy places.
Kill everyone in your family but get someone else to do it at least 2 days before the match then you can say you need some 'me' time and a trip to Bradford to deal with the grief. p.s. Don't really kill anyone. It was a joke.
Hopefully it'll be brought forward to Friday neight, whatever the outcome av a great weekend an Barnsley WIN.
Let one of your tyres down setdi morning. Feign surprise when you all go to load the car up for Bournemouth and on closer inspection, it turns out to be an irreparable puncture. Of course the only place with the right replacement tyre in stock is KwikFit over in Bradford and they can fit you in at 3pm. Bit of traffic, delays getting it done, back home & on the road south by 6pm
