Hi All, Daughter is going there in about 3 weeks time and wondering what the best type of currency to take? Euro’s, Turkish Lira or English Stirling to change out there. Any advice appreciated. TIA
Just come back a few days ago. It really depends where she’s going as some areas prefer sterling, others prefer Euro. If she goes anywhere like a supermarket that is priced in Turkish lira she’d be better off paying on a fee free card such as Monzo.
Thanks for the replies. I was going to give her some money to go away with, but unsure of how & what to give her currency wise.
Im in turkey now. For buying gifts or in restaurants euros seem to be best but for tipping they prefer lira
Haven't been for 4 years but been about 8/9 times, from experience cash is king they crave sterling, infact in some places they want you to pay in pound sterling as it holds more value than the Turkish Lira The exchange rate can fluctuate alot on a daily basis, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse, shop about. In summary it's probably best to take some Lira and some sterling and a card to withdraw, (check fees) They'll be stacks of places doing exchange, from bars, shoos, hotel and exchange places, tell her to shop around and ask a few places before deciding. If she plans on buying anything like gifts or the masses of imitation clothing, bags, shoes etc then keep some Sterling for that as she'll be in a stronger bartering position. Hope she has a good holiday
Around Marmaris and Icmeler the majority of people preferred English sterling when I was there a few weeks ago.
Couldn't agree more, icmeler was my regular destination. Just make sure you know the value it holds vs the rate. I've been to Turkey when the Lira was as low as 4 to the pound and as high as 77.
Take Stirling and change it locally as you will get better rate always pay in lira or card. If you pay in sterling in shops/restaurants they will give you a worse rate by law they have to take cards but they try to add on bank fees if they can. Don’t forget to barter if you get a taxi always insist they put the meter on as it’s the law. Where about in turkey is she going ?
Just take a few lira to start with as lira is a bit volatile so Change every couple of days keep an eye on rate if it goes down use card
