Of which I am one , saw yesterday in the Newcastle Chronicle and today in the Express Labour are going to give us the rest of our pension pot back by the end of the year , flipping hope so ,seems feasible as Millband already gave us a lump back earlier

It's been an ongoing discussion since the last lump was given back , and lots of people said that would never happen, it was another Boris Johnson broken promise , the deal to give the government half the annual surplus expired years ago but the tories kept taking it !

This government has done a lot of what it said it was going to and gets unfairly criticised whatever it does where Johnson and his lot never did.

As a miners son I'm pleased this is another promise kept I'm just sad my dad's not here to benefit from it along with lots of others.

Good news, it's our money that was stolen by the Tories, let's hope the WASPY woman get their stolen money back as well.

This is fairly old news. Whilst I wasn't a miner, I worked for the NCB/British Coal in the 1980s and was made redundant when the research establishment where I worked was closed down. I was a member of BACM (British Association of Colliery Managers) and my redundancy package was under BCSSS (British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme). This was also raided by government like the miners scheme. I understand that the trustees have now also secured the promise of a refund from the government.

Widows receive a pension of a smaller amount; I don't think children get anything.

But isn't this part of his "estate" which should then go to the next of kin....

They should have their houses taken off them and told to stfu then. The responses seen online really pee me off.

Can someone explain what the background to this is? I’ve never heard of this issue.

Basically the government were taking half the annual profit for years in return for a guarantee to pay the pension if the scheme went bust , but kept taking it for years after the end date.

The government raided some pension schemes including the Miners Pension Scheme and BCSSS back in the 90s after privatisation in 1994, the government replaced British Coal as guarantor which paved the way for subsequent raids.
