Was just watching this. Good vlog. Did he say we were paying 125% of turnover in wages? I think Reading were at 220% a few yrs back, and possibly a few more clubs in a similar hole. Good news about the upturn in commercial turnover as well. Every bit helps. I still hear “get some money spent” from time to time, as if we are sitting on a mine of ready cash, but we are obviously spending more than we would like, but not in the obvious way that some would like to see. Would be really helpful to build on this start and get into the Championship this season.
You keep saying this because you want to justify the owners spending money to keep the club running. The truth is the club is no more viable in the championship without consistently selling players for high prices.
yeah that’s what he said which surprised me I thought we were 80 odd percent but maybe that was in the championship
I imagine the pressures of being in the Championship will be just as big - if not bigger. Yes we’ll have more money. We’ll also have bigger wages and even more pressure to spend, in order to compete.
That depends I guess. in league 1 we are trying to compete with the top of the league, the richest teams. in the championship the priority is competing with the bottom third, the poorest clubs.
How big were the losses of clubs in the bottom half of the Championship compared to our losses? I haven't looked so I don't know but there are articles and websites that publish these figures. I would guess that the vast majority, if not all, clubs published significantly greater losses than ours.
In 2023/24 which is the most recent year with full published accounts, the 3 teams that got relegated from the championship, Rotherham, Birmingham and Huddersfield recorded losses of £2m, £16m and £15m respectively. In that year only 4 teams were profitable in the championship - Southampton, Watford, Coventry and Blackburn. All as a result of large player sales as their operating losses were all massively in the negative. For example Southampton would have lost £87m without selling players, but sold players for £123m. In the same accounting period, the average losses for Championship clubs was £440,000 PER WEEK! Roughly about £22m a year as an average.
Also worth mentioning that while Rotherham might look attractive only losing £2m, they also finished bottom with a record low points total.
Really respect Kieran as he brings the figures to life and helps fans understand how screwed the game is. one thing he underplayed is the amount of support the board have put in post the restructure. From February 23 to February 25 the board have put in £16.2m. With the window closed it also means that another cash injection will be needed from the owners.
