Is that a wise idea considering how many pissed up idiots are around that area at 2am? How long till it gets destroyed?

Good. And while they're at it, pull down the monstrosity that was the Raley's offices and make that a park as well.

It's not a waste of money - it will enhance the town centre environment - which hopefully will encourage inward investment. Or would you rather have them spend the money on a "smack-head rehabilitation scheme" or some such?

Then again they could always reduce the rates by the equivalent amount - probably give you back a few pence per month (assuming you live in the Borough).

Surely if they create a park, they need gardeners to attend to it!

No I don't work for the council, however, unlike you, I don't think everything they do is useless.

As for enhancing the town centre with parks, I think this could lead to sustainable jobs by making the town centre a pleasant place to visit and hense spend money. In fact they should go further and close Market Hill, parts of Shambles Street and Church Street too and make the whole area a traffic free piazza. FFS if they can do it in Benidorm then why not in Barnsley?

Is it a waste of money to improve the amenity of the town centre? You seem to be on a mission Bob, a crusade, but you are blinkered because of it.

£1.6m to replace some Tarmac and paving slabs with grass seeds.

Bet they'll some good parties and foreign holidays to be had awarding that contract out. Assuming the contractor isn't in some way related to the councillor.

this hits the nail on the head..... however a lot of forumites appear to think the council has the best interests of the town at the forefront of their minds. Politicians however jumped up they are have one thing in common...they are in politics for themselves and no fekker else.

hope this helps some of the more naive posters on here.

Some of the posts regarding this thread are a typical example of the mentality that some Barnsley folk have. Why not for a change be excited about the proposals instead of thinking that everything the council do is *****??

I for 1 think areas of our tarn a pretty toss but at least the powers above recognize this and are trying to change the infrastructure of the town centre. If and when all these plans materialise Barnsley will once again be a town centre to be proud of. Up towards the town hall is quite nice already but some form of a park is a good idea, in my biased opinion!

It exactly what the Town centre needs to make it a more attractive place. There are few green areas in the Town Centre.

I would however like to see a breakdown of the cost when the council couldn't find £750,000 over 10 years to keep Wombwell Baths open.

Not such a Bad idea need to have a focal point for town centre.Sheffield have the peace gardens ,and that shouts something to be proud of.
make the town centre an attractive place to visit.will be a spring board for a town that needs to loose its unfashionable image.and be that bit different to other nearby cities ,don't need to be collection of just shops .
