Fringe players including Miles Addison, Chris Maguire and Lee Croft are also attracting interest, as is striker Theo Robinson. Jason Shackell And the Rams will consider offers for midfielder James Bailey. Chief executive Tom Glick and manager Nigel Clough have spoken about shuffling the squad this summer in a bid to push on next season. Derby finished this season in 12th place. It is their third best finish in 13 seasons and they feel three new faces or so could see them challenging for the top six in 2012-13. "We keep emphasising, we don't have to sell but if we do, it will be to strengthen the team," said Clough. "We have seen how Southampton and Reading, on a larger scale, have done it and won promotion. "Both raked in £12m on players last summer. We cannot do that but you can apply the same principle. "If one or two players have to go to bring three or four in and it strengthens the team as a whole, then that is what we will look to do. "That is business. It always has been at the majority of levels in football but we don't have to do that." The bid from an unnamed Championship club for Shackell, who cost Derby £750,000 from Barnsley last summer, has not been accepted. He was ever-present this season, stand-in skipper in the absence of the injured Shaun Barker and runner-up to Craig Bryson for the player-of-the-year award. Interest in Shackell does not surprise Clough. "I think it is inevitable after his good season," said Clough, "and there are not too many centre-halves out there as good as him at this level. "As always, every bid we receive will be judged on its merit and whether we can get in a replacement. "If we have not got a replacement lined up and available, then we don't do anything. "The same applies to any player. If an offer allows us to replace a player with a better one, that is part of the on-going process of trying to move forward." Shackell and Jake Buxton formed the centre-back pairing in the final 10 matches of the season following Barker's serious knee injury. Barker has been ruled out for the whole of next season but young defender Mark O'Brien should be fit for the new campaign. The 19-year-old has been sidelined since December with a knee injury. If Derby feel an offer for Shackell is too good to turn down, they will move to bring in another central defender. Of the fringe players, Addison, Maguire and Croft have all been out on loan. Addison has been at Bournemouth, Maguire at Portsmouth and Croft was in the St Johnstone team until he tore a hamstring. Clough said: "Chris Maguire had a good month or two at Portsmouth and so that helped his profile. "Miles and Crofty have not really featured for us in the past season and have a year left on their contracts, so it stands to reason with things being a bit tight that we cannot carry too many on the fringes of the squad. "And James Bailey falls into that category a little bit as well because he has got a year left on his contract. "I think given his contract situation coupled with the emergence of the central midfield two, Craig Bryson and Jeff Hendrick, we will listen to offers for him as well, if it is right. "Craig Bryson and Jeff Hendrick have nailed down the two positions in central midfield at the moment and it shows the improvement we have made. "James played pretty much the first season he was here and some of the first half of this season. Injuries have set him back but the other two have played better." Derby are still keen on signing Northampton Town midfielder Michael Jacobs. 2610 Report Also On This is Derbyshire Ex-Rams skipper's daughter hopes to make a splash in TV show semis (This Is Derbyshire) Man, 20, is arrested after Alton Towers ride shut for two hours (This Is Derbyshire) Rams to consider 'South Stand switch' (This Is Derbyshire) Clough in favour of 'South Stand switch' proposal (This Is Derbyshire) Home-grown stars will put Derby County ahead of the game (This Is Derbyshire) From Around The Web 10 Creepiest Abandoned Morgues on Earth (Environmental Graffiti) How To Erase History On Your Computer** (Videojug) Cat With Two Faces Earns Guinness World Record for Longest Living Janus Cat (Petside) Red Bull's Ride and Seek captures breathtaking moments (Red Bull) Confusion Reigns at Relegated Blackburn (The New York Times) [what's this] 26 Comments Newest Oldest Best rated Worst rated View all by bigjon2010Saturday, May 12 2012, 7:38PM “WE'RE DOOOMED!!!!!!!” Click to rate * * Rating 0 Report by DerbyTomSaturday, May 12 2012, 6:56PM “It would be stupid to sell Jason, he has proved his worth in a Derby shirt and is one of our better players. If the board are testing the ice with the fans by putting this to print than they are wrong! I hope Nigel grows some Balls and demands Shacks stays no matter what the price.” Click to rate * * Rating 0 Report by PeteDerby1Saturday, May 12 2012, 5:50PM “Sure, they've turned the bid down. What we should be asking ourselves is why broadcast it? If someone puts in a bid for one of my companies, I don't set the PR team to run off to the local papers and tell them - unless I'm after selling and I want to attract other bids. Sell fringe players, fine. Sell star players for big money, fine. But DON'T sell your only fit / experienced centre half unless it IS big money and try and kid anyone it's for football reasons or that we're building for the future! Ever since GSE has come here with their claims for big investment to get us back to where belong - as Gadsby said - all they've done is sell off assets and loaned money to prop the club up because of declining attendances, with "no new money introduced". If Shackle DOES go for less than big money, it would be an outrage and an insult to the loyal supporters who have, by and large, continued to back the club and believe in this 'steady building for the future' claim. If they were going to say anything to the media about this, it should be "we are building for the future to capitalise on the progress made last year. All players have their price, but it would have to be a substantial amount of money for us to sell the best centre half in the division". Or words to that effect. I smell a rat here. I just don't trust a word that comes out of the GSE mouthpiece.” Click to rate * * Rating * 1 Report by paul72Saturday, May 12 2012, 5:36PM “boss 72 i didnt renew my ticket for same reason this board a joke.how can we even think about selling shackell weve only had him for for one season .we should keep our best players but bailey mcguire robinson can go to free up money for nigel .” Click to rate * * Rating * 1 Report by TheBoss72Saturday, May 12 2012, 5:17PM “this makes no sense at all in selling Jason Shackell. The talk of selling our better players was one reason why I didn't renew my season ticket.” Click to rate * * Rating * 1 Report Add your comments 4000 characters remaining Ads by Google Volunteer in Ghana £80pwwww.go-ghanavolunteers.com full and part-time opportunities in schools. orphanage & local build Army Cadet Forcewww.ArmyCadets.com/Instructors Help Train Cadets And Gain Your Own Qualifications Too!
