    Why on earth would they pay £2m to avoid compensation...when the compensation will be significantly less than £2m? Nonsensical figure. Might go to Newcastle but theres not a cat in hell's chance we'll get £2m.

    Which players have left the Championship to the Premiership lately? Howson, Sordell? Both gone for well over £2 million. He's the same age as Sordell, and played the same amount of games in the Championship as him as well.

    I don't think £2 million is unrealistic considering that.

    Don't get me wrong, I rate the lad, but looking at it objectively (and from the viewpoint a tribunal might take) Butterfield has had half a good season and is currently out with a long term injury which may (hopefully not) prove to be recurrent in the future.

    When you factor in that if we don't agree compo we have to go through the tribunal lottery, if I were Mike Ashley I wouldn't be offering more than £1m and if I were the Don I think I'd find it hard to turn down.

    Barnsley have probably fabricated this story in the same way agents often do! Raises awareness of his availability and the tribunal in the hope someone will bang a 1 mill bid in for him.

    Maybe because if we let it go to tribunal Newcastle will be one of a few clubs that are after him, but if Newcastle are prepared to pay £2m it will put them in sole position? If we get a firm offer we can let Newcastle speak with him now, so they get the jump on other clubs.
