earlier this week I drove from Bristol to Newport over the M4 bridge and it cost me £5.10 which I'm reliably told goes to a french company. When I did the return journey it cost me nowt. It all seems bizarre to me.

I understand that bit but why only charge one way?

It often happens with bridge tolls

The likelihood is that most people will need to do a return journey so will have paid to use it, you could have fees half the price and collect both ways but you increase costs in collecting the fee.
When I went to Philadelphia last month, all the bridges were tolls going across the river toward the city but no charge coming out of the city.

we should be us charging the jocks & taffs to come into our country not the other way round. In fact, I'd charge £50 a time just to keep LD red on the other side of the border
