Interesting titbit in the chronicle this morning. Doug O’kane quoting Murphy stating that not expected to lose any of our star players and will only sell for a monumental offer in excess of the previous highest fee received of £5m. That being the case who do we suppose we got £5m for? I can only think that it was Moore in which case it would leave the hand wringers and teeth knashing squad on here with a lot of egg on their faces

Mawson was the highest fee we got (5 million)

Stones earned us the most overall but that was due to sell on fee not initial fee. We had a 15% sell on clause for Stones so we got £7.5 million when Everton sold him

    No probably about it. ;-)

Stones was by far and away the biggest fees after the sell on clause, but Mawson was the biggest deal without sell ons.

Thought e Stones fee was around £3m. Yes, forgetting about Ashley Ward, I believe that must be it. Seem to remember it being reported at £4.5m at the time
Mawson must have been around that as well. Trouble is we were well into the “undisclosed” era by that time

Wikipedia says 2.2, which backs up @Tarntyke 's reply

Yeah, not sure whether it was his age or length of contract left or perhaps both, that kept the fee relatively low

4.2 for Ashley, 2.5 for Craig. Both to Blackburn where they did absolutely nowt. Ward regretted leaving.

Did we give him a choice? Can't see the club wanting to turn down £4.5m now, let alone back then.

As you say, it was definitely Mawson. Patrick Cryne told his Facebook "friends" that the fee for Mawson was, in fact, slightly more than the £5 million which was quoted at the time.

Todays transfer fees are based on overinflated prices due to tv money's etc. And works both ways. Paying such exorbitant fees demands the same the other way round.
Carl Tiler was a great deal at the time. £1.5m+ Although I reckon Cloughie thought not.
So £2m today is peanuts. Maybe not for a manager though.
