A term I keep seeing on social media to defend people that have caused offence. My philosophy is that if someone is offended by something, that thing is inherently offensive. I want to point out that I don’t necessarily think that everyone should always try and not be offensive, in particular when it comes to comedy, but you can’t claim something is not offensive, when it has caused offence. Offensiveness is in the eye of the beholder, is what I’m trying to say, I suppose.
Which is kind of why it's a meaningless whine to say something is offensive. Everything will offend someone. It's a bit like the statement everyone is entitled to a opinion. Yes they are, but if that opinion is stupid expect it to be ridiculed accordingly. More relevant is if you can morally and rationally defend a viewpoint.
The bit that always makes me laugh is the "offended on behalf of" brigade. For example, if I'm not a member of the BAME or LGBT communities, I can't complain if I'm offended by ignorance & bigotry directed at them. Funnily enough, when there are Pakistani gangs abusing young white girls and I get offended, then the same people who criticised me for being "offended on behalf of" brigade suddenly have a change of heart and praise me, even though I'm not a young, white girl! Now I wonder what causes their change of heart(?)
even though I'm not a young, white girl! your’e not?!! OMG all this time chatting you up on here wasted!
Even better when its the police being offended on someones behalf Personally I find almost everything Pritti patel says far more offensive than this shirt but maybe I am just a bit sensitive - Sorry about the language but its hard to avoid it being displayed
I swear like the best of them but I don't in front of my 8 year old daughter and folks. I wouldn't want young kids reading that tshirt and i'd be embarrassed if elderly people read that in the street. It isn't necessary. Someone after a bit of twitter fame.
you are right of course and I wouldn't wear it - but there are plenty of people who do wear offensive shirts. Not sure its the best use of police time though and very much doubt they would make a charge stick in court
I'm offended that you are offended on behalf of those who are offended for other people, who may, or may not be offended themselves. Hopefully that covers all bases.
In fairness, mate. A minority of people li Most of them go in my local pub. They just live to be offended by something.
Well unfortunately the word Boris is all over mainstream media so the cat is a bit out of the bag And it was a possibly failed attempt at humour in a thread about giving offence - if you really are offended by the post I will remove the link
No, no, no no, He’s blatantly fcuekd everyone else. By his actions. Far more offensive, ( TBF not the type of T’shirt I like to see using vulgar language, trying to explain to my grandkids just learning to read. ) Same with explicit pictures.
It's impossible to judge if someone is going to be offended by something, unless you take the p*ss out of the Prophet Mohammed, in which case you can guarantee that most Muslims will be offended. Religion in general seems to promote being offended, probably something to do with having deep heartfelt beliefs questioned by outsiders. You also get it in politics - which nowadays seems to be almost like religion - one of the reasons I joined the Greens. Some people do seem to go out of their way to offended but that's their problem not mine. I guess some Wendy fans are offended by being called "Pigs" and some Reds fans will be offended by the label "Dingles". Personally there's not much offends me.
