The only argument is it should have been a corner and not a drop ball. The attacking team shouldn’t be punished if the referee has made an incorrect decision.

Exactly that, Loko. I was typing the same thing when you replied. It's a convincing argument for me.

apart from it should have been a Chelsea free kick - the wednesday striker was late and kicked the chelsea defender in the ankle which is why he fell over it - thats a foul isnt it?

I thought his dive for the ball would have made him fall over and then there was natural contact but not a foul. No different to just coming together accidentally.

By all accounts a drop ball was given because the ball hadn’t gone out of play when the ref blew his whistle. I get that actually, but still feels harsh on the attacking team.

Technically the ref was right. Play had stopped the instant the tackle was made and the pen given. Ball was dead, so couldn't have been a corner. Drop ball was absolutely the correct decision.

    Ok, I get that.
    In that case either
    A. Refs are instructed not to stop play until t the ball is dead (head injury excepted) and the decision is reviewed before play resumes

    Or

    B. VAR is entirely incompatible with Association Football.

    I'm going B.

In the words of Half Man Half Biscuit's The Referee's Alphabet, "The M is for the mistakes we sometimes make. Surely a bit of controversy is part of the game's appeal"

The why wasn’t the attacking team given a chance to contest the drop ball?

Contested drop balls are rarer than hen's teeth. Or a Moncur tackle.
