Just weird, seems we've bought into this idea from Europe - certainly seen the Italians doing it down the years, and good luck to them. BUT the tradition in this country has always been the SILENCE, if we can't stand as a crowd and just STFU for 1 minute then its the odd idiot mong shouting that looks like they've no class. With the clapping, I heard people talking to each other and then the Donni fans started a chant anyway, utterly crap. Bring back 1 minutes silence if only to shame the kn*b jockeys who can't observe it rather than letting them hide behind a load of "clapping".
Fair enough to them then, still think silence is the best way to show respect personally, people were still chatting around me during the clap.
I personally feel that someone who dies in tragic circumstances should be silence for the loss of that person but a former player or someone say like sir bobby robson it should be applause as a celebration of their achievements in the game. Just my view and please be aware, other views are available !
Maybe the soldier's family wanted a minute's applause in order to celebrate their loved one's life and look forward, rather than being morbid and requested such? I think it was a nice touch and showed appreciation for those in the British armed soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for us.
Also it only takes one or two idiots to shout out during the silence to spoil it which causes people to tell them to shut up and that moment is then ruined.
I think the families wishes should be respected, but as they've lost a son I doubt they care as long as its marked with respect, all I'm saying is that traditionally we, in England, stand in silence at the memory of the dead, and long may that tradition continue.
Spot on Matt. You only have to look at England v Spain last week to hear picks spoiling It by shouting. I it was me, I'd prefer the applause than the silence. But as normal, BFC have immature to moan about
Yeah, lets just give in to the kn*bs and make some noise for a minute rather than silence, I think we're just giving in and saying you've won to the d*cks who have selective turrets and can't keep quiet for 1 minute.
did the club actually get the ???? of his family? cant think of the word in this matter, i think personally silence is best, but having never lost anyone close, i'd just abide by the family wishes, if made.
why wasn't frank beaumont mentioned, the passing of a former player should have same respect shown as the young solider

I think it depends on the situation as said above. Tragedies should be silence, but a celebration of a life seems more fitting as applause. Silence has always felt right somehow, but when people spoil it trouble can occur (fans during G Best silence, Stoke Wigan for Stanley Mathews). Suppose both have their place. Just on the Donny fans, I heard the 'We're proud of you' chant, usually reserved for their team. Great touch that, shows how spontaneous football fans can be. Fair play to them.
