Education, Education, Education., and after billions spent our standards have declined!!!! So Mr Balls has a new 10 year plan, fiddling about with primary education, as usual. By the time this lot are finished we'll be a nation of illiterates.

Heard a great quote at the weekend regarding constant testing of school children

"If you want a pig to get fat, you feed it rather than just weighing it all the time"!

    Son wants to teach primary

... he's in his last year of English.

As from Aug 08 the amount he'd receive from the state to assist in his training year has reduced from £6k to £4k. In addition to this English graduates now get a golden hello of £2.5K. After this year this is no more. Son will still train as a teacher as it's what he wants to do.

I'm bringing this up not because I think people should be subsidised through teacher training, butI think it is an example of the government saying one thing and doing another.

Teachers have been given such a bad time

Not pay wise necessarily, but in terms of how they are regarded in society that people are now thinking more than twice about teaching as a career.

So easy to blame our education system, but, take a long........

at the standard of parents we have, education starts at home and then encouraged from home, some young parents these days are too thick to realise this.

    Parents, Parents, Parents

I give you the biggest investment in education for decades, if education is piss poor I would suggest the failings start at home in and with problems in society as a whole for which we are all culpable.

    Teachers biggest bunch of whiners!

Stop whinging and start working a bit harder!

REASON BASIC SKILLS HAVE NOT IMPROVED EVEN THOUGH CASG=H HAS BEEN THROWN AT IT IS BECAUSE THE TEACHERS ARE INCOMPETENT!

    RE: Parents, Parents, Parents

From what i've experienced the current generation of parents responsible for youngsters (aged 5-12) is that most don't give a ****! They're more bothered about how to screw the state, antagonise other parents, etc as though the undercurrence of violence is something to be proud of (?) A classic example is my brother-in-law who, on being questioned, replied that he wouldn't mind his son being an Arsenal supporter (the brother-in-law is a staunch Chelsea fan), and he wouldn't mind if his son was gay as he would try and comfort him. When asked about his son going to university/college he raged: "No facking son of mine is going to facking college!" And that, sadly, is the truth..................... Nowadays his boy has just been kicked out of his mother's house after smashing it up with a few mates for the umpteenth time was enough for her. The boy is moaning how unjust life is. He's been sacked from 7 jobs in the past 6 months blah! blah! blah!

RE: how have our standards declined? nt

I would be interested to know that myself.

Todays teachers are the best we have ever had. At my Schools in the 50s and 60s very few teachers were graduates and yet it was called a "Golden Age of ", insert Mathematics, English or whatever . It's a myth that standards are dropping we are simply demanding more and more from our kids in an overcrowded curriculum. There is simply too much information now for some kids to take on board. There has been constant claims of dropping standards since the late 1800s, normally made by Public School educated elitists.

In the early 1900s my Grandmother was called into School and told that they couldn't teach one of my Uncles anything else. He was quite bright but he was only 11. I don't think a School would be in that position today?

In the 1960s only 20% of kids were allowed to take GCEs the rest of us "thickos" left at 15. So how anyone can claim standards are declining when over 50% are getting grades A-C in their GCSEs is beyond me.

If Schools were better in those days then why did so many of us who were branded as failures at 15 by then go on to University and get a degree later in life?

The blame lies in the 80`s with Thatcherism

The parents of today grew up during the 80`s, when we were told that it was alright to be greedy and only look after yourself, **** everyone else. These people have grown up thinking that and they dont care about anything other than themselves and how much they can get. Is it any wonder that the kids of these people are nothing but little shits and have no care or concern about any damage or injury they cause to others.
The seeds sown by Thatcher have well and truely been Harvested.

Well Done Maggie and all her cronies
