I will never forget my visit to Hillsborough on that day and it will never leave me or my friends who attended. Seeing lifeless young people caused by standing and inept planning and Policing. There is No Need for standing as the atmosphere in Oakwell has demonstrated with seating. There is no such thing as safe standing as other countries li Asia and South America have regular fatalities albeit not on mass but fans who have fallen. I see the Morons on a regular basis in the Ponty end and I cringe everytime. If we extend standing at Oakwell then I'm afraid my nerves would not take it. Sounds crazy I know but I would not wish the sights and madness I saw at Hillsborough on any one
Perfectly understandable to feel like that. I hope if it is reintroduced it is appropriately stewarded so that anyone putting others in danger is removed from the area.
1989. I understand your feelings totally, my Dad saw terrible things. He also saw terrible things at Valley Parade and in that instance seats prevented many escaping. It's a tough call. I used to love standing, but have got used to sitting. Also, mistakes made at Hillsborough thankfully weren't a regular occurrence. That and Ibrox were 2 games out of millions played over the years.
For me it was the security fencing that didn't allow the fans to escape onto the pitch. And those have been got rid of thankfully.
yes I’d agree. The fencing created the disaster not the terracing but it was easier for Govt to criticise fan behaviour rather than ownership behaviour
Poor policing, poor capacity planning and perimeter fencing were main causes to the disaster as well as idiot fans. No reason why terracing couldn’t be reintroduced safely in the modern era though in my opinion.
I do feel that people think safe standing is exactly how it used to be, and not how it actually is, in your allocated space. I won't comment on history except to say, I don't believe it was the standing itself that caused any issue.
Imo I can’t see why we they can’t bring it in without moving seats etc . Fans are standing now unofficially and spoiling views of people who want/need to sit . Just appoint a section where people are allowed to stand if they want at their seats and police the areas where it’s not permissible . It’s not rocket science
That's not possible though, unless it's limited to the the back few rows of one of the stands. If you have one block of the west stand standing, you're blocking the view of those seated in the next block, and potentially some at the end of the Ponty. So it's either all or nothing per stand.
I'd have to see it to know, but if you imagine one section of the West Stand being done, you're blocking the view of those in the next section.
Unless it’s installed in the half of the stand that doesn’t get used. Would be perfect for the teams coming out the tunnel/that end of the pitch.
Man U have just installed 1500 ready for use. Chelsea have added them in 3 areas. Liverpool have added 7800 to the Kop and Anfield Road. Tottenham and Wolves both have thousands already installed. Leeds are in the middle of adding some.
Yes I know but they've all done so at huge cost. For example Manchester United paid well over £100k for less than 2% of their seats to be converted. This isn't what Bristol have done and isn't a legal option
They haven't installed the rail seats which are part of the trial, all they've done is bolted a new rail in front of every existing seat. It's not got any kind of approval as far as I'm aware.
