For average away attendance in 2014. 1,130. Not bad for a small club throughout one of our worst calendar years in my lifetime.
Good to say were having a bad season imagine if we were in top six. Donny away next up too should be a good turn out.
To be fair it's not really a fair assessment because...... 1) Plenty below us in the list will have sold out away followings alot so it's not their fault they couldn't take more fans. 2) We have alot of teams no more than an hour away.
Superb support and I actually do believe the Club recognise this, as they mention it quite often in media interviews. I have only contributed (away) at Rochdale, thus far.
Only Watford and Middlesbrough of the clubs above us are considered towns. Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Cardiff, Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Bristol, Coventry, Norwich and Derby are all cities, and both Millwall and Charlton are in that London. We average 200 less away fans on average than the mighty Sheff Utd. In fact, if we can get the average up by another 300, we would be top 8 in the FL for away support. We're above Fulham, Blackburn, Rotherham, Doncaster, Bradford, Huddersfield, Ipswich, Chesterfield, Bolton, Reading, PNE, Rochdale, Blackpool, Brighton, Portsmouth, Luton etc etc. I think it's at least one positive thing about our club. Be proud, Be Barnsley. Or, just feckin whinge. Spare a thought for Accrington Stanley, who average just 94 away supporters. Hats off to them.
Is that for this season or 2014 as a whole? Our support has been decent so far this year. Thought we'd take a lot more to Rochdale, and Crewe given it was our opening away game, but other than that we've been pretty well supported most places. We've a lot of 300+ mile round trips in the new year, Gillingham, Swindon, Bristol City, Colchester, Leyton Orient and Crawley which will drop the average a bit, but it'll still be around the 1000 mark, which for a club of our size and a total lack of success the last 8/9 years would be pretty good going. Saying that, I'd love to see what our followings would be like with a season in and around the top 6. Hopefully next year.
**** support from hooligans costing the club money. Our away support should not be commended when it is the worst in the league for trouble
Yeah, I reckon most of our support away from home are hooligans. Definitely not a few dozen at most. Jesus wept.
If anyone's interested I've been keeping a table of away attendances this season in League 1, taken from club twitter accounts, official websites, forums and match programmes. We're 3rd in League 1 so far, only behind Bristol City and the Blunts: Edit: Red denotes midweek games Also, if anyone doesn't have a magnifying glass handy, right click and open the image in another tab.
