Long shot I know , just found some old programmes of my dads who he reached semi final at Oakwell playing for Barnsley boys Maurice Firth also played was he the club histotian at one time ? Anyone know who the current club historian would be fascinated if there is any old photos anywhere or with anyone for further info
Maybe some help Maurice was a school teacher/Headmaster, When I first met him in the Engineers at Higham He used to write reports on upcoming Barnsley F.C. opponents for the club aswell as other football related tasks a proper gentleman.
Are you thinking of Grenville Firth? Dave Wood is the club historian he might be able to help. Probably easiest to message him via Twitter / X https://x.com/oakwelhistorian?s=21&t=maVwlBVh-IrDYvsuBVjM4Q
No Grenville wrote some Barnsley F.C. related books and his picture is on the cover it definitley wasn`t him
I have got a good collection of Barnsley Boys programmes from this era and newspaper cuttings. Send me a message...
Maurice was older than that team. I think my Dad was in that team possibly, depends on the age group. Maurice was a good 10-15 years older than my Dad. I’d say maybe John Stainsby might have been in that team and Dennis Green. Maurice was never the historian, he was heavily involved with Barnsley boys for decades until the early 90s.
Maurice Firth was a highly regarded coach of Barnsley Boys. Incidentally, I remember reading in the Chronicle many years ago that at that point, probably in the 70s or early 80s, only Liverpool Boys had won more games than Barnsley Boys in the history of the English Schools Trophy.
Cheers for that mate, very interesting looking back at names of players from the past.I knew odd one I played with, also dad of one of mi mates on there and some lads I got to know over the years. There is also a couple of “invitations to presentation dinner” for a Mr A Lodge, not 100% sure but I reckon he was school teacher/football manager at my old school in Ward Green, he was a great bloke.
Hi Andy,do you have any programmes from 1952/53 season. My dad Ronald Sharp played right half that season.Would really appreciate it if you could post one.
Did you notice who was Captain of the 1957 team (who went on to win the English and Yorkshire cups)? Our former Director, Barry Taylor Maurice was the coach of that team along side Harold Rushforth Im told Heres a photo of the team and coach from Barry:
Im told your Dad was three years younger than those in that team Was just hearing from Barry that there were 20k at Oakwell for that fixture and they were dissapointed at the end of the season when only 10k turned up to watch them play a friendly with Liverpool Boys
Dougie Wright 1967. worra guy... I see in that team... Geoff English, Doug O'Connor, Vic Vaines (?), Brian Greenhoff. Barry Crowther, Trevor Phillips.. Hope from darton.. versus sheffield... who had Carl Law in the team. He went to Worsbro before going back to sheffield.. well... surprised to see these names ... who are all 71ish years old... (sadly, not Dougie)
Vic Vaines still lives in Hoyland, Was recently captain of a very successful walking football team that was well documented in the local press.
I will put some on the Flickr site for you. Just not got round to scanning programmes from that season
