Having moved away in June 07 I had not seen a game the whole of the 2007/2008 season. Having made wholesale chances only 2 players started the game who I had seen play before in a reds shirt. Personally, ater attending bfc games for 23 years I felt a bit of an imposter attending this one and not knowing the players. How people can turn up for big games is beyond me. Right here we go: Firstly pies and bovril have gotten much hotter. Sorry to the young lass who had to hear me say "**** me, they've poured the sun into my drink". Right onto the football part. Its the first game ive attended in 15 months, and I went trying not to form an opinion based on some of the posts on here. I wanted to give everyone a chance and see how the played first hand. Thoughts: Steele: Great shot stopper and seemed to command his area. I'd heard he was a young Colgan, but on that showing he was brilliant. People around me say its because Muller is back in contention for the next game - not sure I agree. Foster: Obviously everyone loves him, and you can see why. Composed, quick and didn't put a foot wrong. He's a cracking right back, and Im assuming he'd be great in the centre. Kozluk: Didn't put a foot wrong. Not much got by him. Sound left back. Moore: Give him the ball in the air and he won everything. Give him the ball on the deck and it comes down with snow on. Ive never seen someone get the ball so high in such a short distance. One very dodgy moment when they scored, but other than that ok. Souza: Steady, good header of the ball. Reads the game well. Didnt put a foot wrong. Devaney: One of only two players in the starting line up who I had seen play before. You know what your going to get. Someone who tries, lots of tricks that rarely come off, but he still gets you on your feet when they do. A pure class moment in the first half. el Ham: Lots of hard work, and very impressed when he was helping out on the right hand side. Very fit. Didnt do much with the ball though, and wasrightly subbed. Leon: Was looking forward to seeing him play. Thought he was poor. Too many flicks and tricks. Got over ran in the midfield and its no coincidence when he came off Derby stopped being a threat. Also meant Howard played a deeper a role. Howard: The only other player I'd seen in a reds shirt. Because of Leon, he had a less attacking role. Thought he did OK, but nothing great. Was expecting the world beater people seem he is. He's a decent championship player, as been for the previously two years and will be going forward. Is he worth 10k a week? Not a chance - but i'd try and keep him. Hume: Did nothing all game - except score a wonder a goal. If thats what he does then 1.2m is a snip. Can't remember the last time we had a player who could change a game in the blink of an eye. Macken: Very average indeed. Didnt do much for me. He's never been a prolific scorer except for one season at Preston. He would need to add more to his game to warrant being in the side on that performance. Subs: KO. This is the player I tried the hardest not to form a judgement on - but when I saw him coming on I said "oh no,whats Davey thinking". What a surprise - he played really well. Won his headers. Put himself about a bit and generally made pain of himself. I was glad he did, as I would have written him off from day one had he not. Well done lad. Davey: Spot on tactics. Great substitutions at the right time. Comments to the media afterwards are about players getting their rewards when it would have been easier for him to pat himself on the back. Tought game against higher reputation team. Won ugly, and 3 points is 3 points. Its good to be back down Oakwell! Ramblings over.
far too sensible for this board!!!!!!!! agree about Macken entirely-Hume and he shouldn't play together
Hume did nothing all game until he scored because he didnt get the ball to his feet, whats the point in whacking the ball in the air for him? he needs it to his feet. Absolutely class when Davey put him on the left wing, nuff said.
I agree about Hume and Macken not working. We aren't getting the ball forward on the floor often enough for Hume to get on the ball. From what i have seen of him we need him with the ball at his feet. Best way to do that is to get him involved in the play a little earlier. Him on left and JCR on right sounds good to me. Leaves us lacking a striker still though. Unless KO can recreate his form from yesterday more regularly, and for a full 90 mins. Hopefully Rigters will come good, or Mostto.
