I've just been reading an article in todays paper. It seems Sepp Blatter has given the F.A.'s of the 4 home nations, written assurances that should a GB football team be entered into the Olympics, F.I.F.A. won't try to force a GB team to compete in the World Cup or European Championships. The article went on to say that the Scots have said that they & the Welsh are still against it so any team would simply be made up of players from England & Northern Ireland. All of this got me thinking of any players from Scotland or Wales, Northern Ireland for that matter too, that would be good enough for the team & I got nowhere! Bearing in mind players would have to be uder 23 to be allowed to compete, can anyone else name any non English player that would be worth a place in the squad, should it actually happen?
Are you looking for non-English 18 year olds who you think could make it in 2002? If so there's that James McCarthy...though with such a surname he may choose to represent Rep.Ireland. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/h/hamilton_academical/6244339.stm What about Nyatanga? Surely a future welsh captain?
Those could be 2 As you've pointed out, to compete in the 2012 Olympics, they'd have to be no older than 17 or 18, depending on the birthday cut off date to be eligible for 2012. To be honest, although I didn't make it clear, I was actually trying to think of players that are under 23 now that would be good enough if we were to put together a squad.
