… Barnsley won 4-1 away at Walsall, the Saturday 3pm kick-off (remember those?) coinciding with my missus and me tying the knot in York registry office, making today our Silver Wedding Anniversary. My wife chose April 1st because it had been her parents’ wedding day, and it seemed appropriate to me too for reasons of my own. It’s certainly easy to remember, and since it was in the year 2000 it’s easy to calculate too. We had the meal part of the reception in our favourite York restaurant at the time, La Piazza on Goodramgate, and since this was before the era of smartphones, a friend was tasked with nipping to the pub next door (The Snickleway Inn, formerly The Angler's Arms) at full time to relay the results, and obviously ours got a big cheer, but I also remember him telling me some time later that he had decided to report a Barnsley victory whatever the actual result, and to let me deal with any disappointment another day, which I thought was a nice touch. I also remember the date of our wedding coming up in conversation with @Turvey Tyke some years later, on our way up the M1 to Oakwell for a game, only for him to say, “Oh yeah, we beat Walsall 4-1 away that day”, and to provide me with a short match summary seeing as I’d missed it. I don’t know how he does it.
Happy Anniversary! I was at that game when I should have been revising for my finals. I presume that given she has already made you miss one fixture, your Anniversary plans involve a meal in the Executive box at the Exeter game this evening?
Nice idea, but our anniversary meal will be a Greek-style butterflied leg of lamb, cooked on the barbecue that we've recently installed at the top of the riverbank of our place here in Burgundy, washed down with a 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune. Followed by streaming the Exeter match, obvs.
Congratulations! On my 18th wedding anniversary (6.5.06) we also won at Walsall, 2-1. If I'm not mistaken, we got promoted via play offs, in this season
Happy anniversary to you both! My turn in December, it's been a great 24.3333... recurring years so far. Enjoy your day!
Is that the game where the Wallsall keeper got sent off at 1 nil to them? I remember going but I was only 13 at the time...
It's probably the one you're thinking of, but he was sent off at 0-0 after 10 minutes, with them scoring first and all the goals coming in the second half. Graydon fury as keeper throws it away
I think Craig Hignett came on at half time coming back after injury? Totally ran the game and turned it around. What he did…..class player.
Port Vale at home my anniversary. 1-1. Owen Archdeacon. Would have been 7,333 crowd if I'd made the effort.
