    IMO
1: Basset. Couldn't afford him after gambling on going up that season.

2: Clarke. Run out of ideas

3: Ritchie. Too loyal to players who got him promoted and we would have gone straight back down if we hadnt

Agree with other two but surley when we sacked bassett we had to pay him out of his contract then employ new mnger so would have cost more

Don't think you can really class Ritchie as a really bad sacking because we achieved our goal that year. Not many like Davey but he did a decent job that first year to keep us up.

I'm going for Mad Mel Machin.

Everyone else other than Bassett probably got what they deserved.

We shouldn't have allowed Bassett to leave. I think it was the old 'mutual consent' when he went, but there were people on the board who didn't support him from the outset. That said, he left us in a bit of a mess by renewing contracts of players like Tinkler who should have been released.

Gudjon was unlucky to get the chop, but his days were numbered as soon as Ridsdale took over, as Ridsdale wanted his own man in.

Bobby Collins was unlucky too. He made some good signings and we actually had a decent season under him.

I can't agree with Clarke, Ritchie or Hill though. In fact Hill should have gone a couple of games earlier when it was pretty clear he'd given up.

I thought Mad Mel resigned because he'd promised to get us promoted within three years or taking over and failed. Plus we seemed to get worse every season under him. His first full season we played some lovely attacking football and only just missed out on the play-offs. Then he went mad, started signing just centre halves, and converting half the rest of the team into defenders for good measure.

I only left Ritchie off the list because as thankful as I am that he got us up, I really think he'd taken us as far as his ability could take us and we would have come back down that season had we not acted.

Basset - it all went a bit wrong after that.
Gudjon - reasons stated above, Totally wasn't his fault
Mad Mel - but this lead to Danny Wilson coming aboard as vivs assistant.

Personally thought Bassett sowed the seeds for the decline that followed

I thought you said Hill should have gone when he did ? You even did a blog endeavour the line or something ?
So why is it a bad sacking ?

Anyone saying that sacking Bassett was the wrong move must have forgotten just how bad we were in the lead up to his departure. Without Hignett and Eaden we just looked absolutely one dimensional, barring one excellent display against West Brom. Plus he released Arjan De Zeeuwe, but signed Chettle, Tuttle and Brown. Which suggests he thought they were all better players than 'Arry. Which is a little odd for someone who supposedly knew anything about football.

As for Bassett's, can we start a 'worst hiring' thread?

Really? But for a missed penalty he'd have probably got us back into the Premier League. It was only the next season that things started to go pear shaped. Our worst ever managerial appointment was John Hendrie. Giving a rookie manager one of our two shots to get promoted was sheer madness.

I thought we were ok! love this game and differing opinions :)

you are exactly right about John Hendrie. Its easy to see now that John Dennis panicked and made the appointment to appease the fans.

In fairness to Hendrie I think we were tenth in the Championship when he was sacked I think the powers that be might have panicked in there belief that we needed automatic promotion.

Forgotten about Bobby yes he was very unlucky. Finished 11th. Only lost 1 in 23 at one stage and signed Futcher and Baker on gates of 5,000 while having his best players sold.
