Agreed and I think everyone is with you including the manager. It's the weirdest thing though that I can't think of any player ever that is such a good finisher and yet is so rubbish in general play.
Bit harsh given his assists record recently. Glad that the penny finally dropped with Johnson. Decide who you're best/most effective players are and play to their strengths. It's a simple game.
True, even when we were losing I don't think we got battered by any means but the 3-5-1/4-5-1 was piss poor! 4-4-2 plays into each one of our players strengths and the results are now showing!!
He can play as ***** as he wants if he bangs a hat trick in each game. Striker. He is paid to score goals. No more needs to be said
We are much better than the 451 ****** earlier in the season. Hamill and whites arrival has helped also playing 442 with Watkins partnering sam winall has also 442 a simple system what everyone understands wish we had started the season with this system and these players
Don't think it's quite as simple as this. Winnall and Hourihane were our best players last year but we couldn't play 4 4 2 because Hourihane was unable to play in a central 2. There were numerous threads on here about this issue at the time - and every time I saw us try it we were dominated in midfield. Big difference now is that Hourihane is more than holding his own in a 2 - allowing us to play Winnall up top. We dominated that area despite Rochdale only playing 1 up top. That's why I disagree with some of the views that our upturn is only due to Hammill and nothing to do with Johnson. Yes, injuries may have forced 4 4 2 on us somewhat, but there's no denying that the Hourihane has improved substantially from last year, and this must be due to the management / coaching he's getting. Or the amateur tacticians and Johnson were just wrong about Hourihane. He was perfectly capable of playing in a midfield 2 last season (in fact he played his best football when doing so) and actually looks worse in a 3 when he isn't given responsibility.
He also played some of his worse football in a two. When playing alongside Berry or Bailey he was abysmal. Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk
I'm sorry but that's not my general recollection. Playing in a midfield 2 he scored lots of goals and won League 1 player of the month. It was only when first Wilson and then Johnson played him out of position that his form suffered. He also missed Winnall when he was injured as the only other real quality in our squad at the time. This isn't to say he didn't have some poorer games when played centrally as he is a 3rd tier footballer not playing for Barcelona. Football at our level is a simple game. You isolate your better players and play to their strengths otherwise the wheels come off sharpish. Earlier in the season we didn't utilise the strengths of Hourihane or Winnall and suffered as a result. As you said against Fleetwood Winnall was awful again he is a fantastic player at our level but only when supported by a particular type of player. The most pleasing aspect of our mini Renaissance for me Is that Johnson seems to have learned from his mistakes and is player a system to get the best out of his better players.
Agree with this. Hourihane was more than capable of playing in a 2. I'm sure him & Bailey played together in one against a top league one side & dominated midfield late in the season when Scowen & Pearson weren't available
