after trouble flared during at the Barnsley V Bradford City match. From today's Chron's Looking back column on page 14. I remember that day and indeed, other Bradford games from the 70s, there seemed to always be major trouble at this fixture far more than say Donny or Rotherham.
i was 5 days from been born, still in the womb kicking and supporting the mighty reds. and slade were number 1 with come on make some noise. ive been noisey ever since
I remember them breaking up the terrace at VP to lob bits at us rahnd abart then. And what did the cops do - corraled us into a corner to make us an easier target - basterds.
That was about 1975, The Horse was called Brigadier if memory serves and it lost an eye. My mate was taken to Hospital for stitches after being hit on the head with a House brick, apparently thrown by a Barnsley fan. The Casualty ward at the Old Becketts hospital was overflowing with football fans that day. Crazy times indeed.
That was 1976. I'd only just started to go to games without my parents and managed to get mixed up in the middle of that. I never said a word about it when I got home as I knew that would be the end of my football career.
Remember going to Millmoor and getting pelted with bricks and bottles goin down to the Railway end, we were crammed in the lane, Sitting Ducks.....scared shitless, then Bricking it as we had to go into Rotherham to get the 228/9 home....Bloody Hell.
They were building the harbrough hills flyover at the time we were walking just in front of the Bradford fans and police escort when we got to flyover on ponty road the Barnsley fans were lying in wait with bricks and anybody in the way got it be it Bradford fans Barnsley fans police or innocent bystanders they were all fair game to these morons.luckily I didn,t get hit but lots did including the poor horse which the police carried on riding until its shift had done.
