That stat obviously relates to the all time second tier standings, not just the Championship but still impressive
That's quite remarkable! Shows where our 'natural level' really is... Only due to wealthy owners buying smaller clubs like Wigan, Bournemouth etc that we now struggle to retain status in the second tier.
It’s our natural level historically but certainly not currently or in the short term future. We’re more top end L1 these days. If we don’t get promoted this season it will start to get very hard to get back up, particularly with some strongly backed clubs coming up from L2 as well.
I think we are at our natural level now. Second tier. I say that because historically the top flight was always in touching distance. Nowadays it is far, far removed and the top flight is no longer the cream of English / British players but instead the cream of the elite of European and WORLD players. The top flight is essentially a prime, elite level league - untouchable and almost an Exhibition League. Were are 2nd tier amongst the rest. Championsip itself is almost becoming a big ask for us.
That total was.accrued over 78 seasons, which works out at 53 points per season. I assume that the 2 points per victory which used to be awarded have been changed to 3 for all seasons for the purpose of this table.Until the formation of the Premier League, the second tier had only 22 clubs and hence played 42 games per season, so our average points per season is a bit better than if we had played 46 games in all of the 78 seasons, but I think the average represents fairly well that our history has been dominated by many struggling seasons in the second tier. As has been pointed out, we have been promoted only once from the second tier and have been relegated 8 times - only twice between 1898 and 1953, spending two seasons the first time in 3rd North and making an immediate return the second time. 4 of our 8 relegations have happened in the last 22 years, and 3 in the last 10 years.
