Will David Davis and his civil liberties / human rights crew still feel the same when Islamic Jihad detonate a nucleur bomb in a major western city with hundreds of thousands dead?

It will happen, maybe not for some time, but probably in our lifetime.

There is no negotiating a truce with these people, we are so far apart in our ideals that it will carry on until such a possibility becomes reality.

So a few innocent Muslims get detained for a few days longer..... so what?

Terrorism is so serious, there should be no limit to how long people can be held. 42 days my arse.

And if anyone disagrees, they can ballax!

Well, if it saves one life

then its worth the cost, which is to joe public, miniscule.

We are not likely to be using the power willy nilly.

preventing / disrupting a terrorist attack?

    giving time to gather evidence??

    Difficult to say.

Cant see it being abused so cant see the point of the vociferous objections

Well presumablythe coppers think that 28 days

is not long enough to charge someone, possibly planning a terrorist attack, in some cases.

If they release them, they may be able to help carry out the attack and kills loads of folk. If they get extra time, they may get the evidence to charge them and detain in custody until trial.

Call me old fashioned but ......

that doesn't answer the question. What do we gain from it?

Taking that arguement to an extreme if we lock everybody up we would be safer. Shall we do that?

We lose nothing, neither do the detainees

Did the Muslim Jihadi give a flying f*ck, or have a democratic debate, when Brian Keenan was "detained" in a cockroach infested filthy hole in the ground, beat to a pulp, in almost total darkness and his own piss/****, chained up and blindfolded for FOUR flipping YEARS???

    No, didn't think so.

John McCarthy, Terry Waite, all the other hostages would have loved 42 days in a comfy cell compared to what they went through. Read Brian Keenan's "An Evil Cradling", an incredible account of his internment.

And when the big bomb goes off, some people really might come round to the fact that we were far too soft all along; but of course, by then, it will be tool late.

I've stopped out of this debate but that is ridiculous

You ask Brian Keenan what he thinks of our governments 42 day detainment. i can tell you one thing, if he'd read your comment he would be appalled that you have read his book and could hold that opinion. Thats like reading to Kill A Mocking Bird and using it to justfiy racism

Have a think about what you wrote borderterrier

You rightly say that holding people without charge is wrong (taking hostage), then you argue we should hold people without charge. Do you suggest we take everybody hostage we think may do harm? Who decides this?

    Remember 2 wrongs don't make a right.

    Northern Ireland

Plus, all this business about bribing the unionists with money for northern ireland. Are the tories really suggesting that we shouldn't be investing in Northern Ireland? Interesting viewpoint. I personally disagree.

Yes Acton & Ark I put it completely wrong

What I meant to say was these people are so far away from our western standards of democracy and human decency that there is no debate.

I put the Beirut hostages as an example merely to show that a few days in detention, to fight the threat of these movements, in the scheme of things, is absolutely nothing.

I think the Beirut hostages would do another 14 days themsleves in a British cell, if it saved lives, British, Muslim, or otherwise.

    Do you not think?
