A brilliant appointment that transformed the club forever.

    I couldn't agree more.
That was the season when I first got the bug, and I've had it ever since through thick and thin.

My Dad says that changed the club. He made a bold prediction that the club would make the top flight. Had a bet with my Great Uncle Joe that Barnsley would make the old first division. They didn't manage that but eventually got to the Premier League. (He never paid out).

Clarke's appointment paved the way for all that.

Saved us from mediocrity and set the scene for some great years.

It took the club 19 years from the Old Fourth Division to the Premier League. The vision of PMG and even the Parekh regime is to get back. We're seven years into a new adventure.

After the Iley years the sudden buzz around Oakwell was incredible, Allen Clarke, the Allen Clarke playing for little old Barnsley! I remember him scoring his first goal for us and that bent arm raised in the way we’d seen so many times on TV when he’d scored for Leeds or England, then he brought Ronnie Glavin to Barnsley, what a time to be a teenage Reds fan!

It's weird. I've seen Bournemouth and Luton in recent years have that immediate crest of a wave. However, I think the way we did it was more enjoyable. We had twenty years on the up.

I'd say thee most defining moment in the clubs history.. all our modern successes, prem, Wembley appearances stemmed from that one decision

Be nice if Darrell Clarke could follow in his namesakes footsteps.

His son is a good pal of mine and I’ve spent an evening in his Dads company when he came as a guest a few years ago at the charity night in the Metrodome.
He loved talking about his days as a player at Leeds mainly, but also at Barnsley.
I’ve sent him the above reminder ( via his son ) but think he may have already known as he has a very good factual memory

Big Mick, in a recent TALKSPORT interview said, although he started his Oakwell career under Jim Iley (out) and also played under Norman Hunter, it was Allan Clarke that totally transformed the club, by making the place more professional from top to bottom

Wow that 50k, was apparently a massive amount for this club then.
And what a piece of business it was, even though he only stayed for 2 and a third years.

From the fans perspective that was true… he was disciplined to the point that a few players didn’t appreciate it but it certainly had success and an exciting playing style that wasn’t the norm under a long serving Jim Iley.
Mind you, one signing alone made such a dramatic change on our club !!!

A question without googling … which club did Glavin go to after leaving Barnsley ?

Wasn't it to Belenenses in Portugal?

Edit - this is completely random but it turns out I walked past their stadium on Wednesday without knowing. We've been visiting friends in Lisbon and we went for a walk in Belem and I was wondering whose stadium I could see as it was clearly nowhere near big enough to be one of the big clubs. Just Googled to see where the club is based and it's in that exact district of Lisbon.
