We were the first club to play against the newly formed MK Dons. Drew 1-1. There were around 4,500 supporters there. How times change.
Was that the game with the Harold Shipman looking steward? If so I was there too sat smack behind the net.
I was there. I only lived 15 minutes away at the time in Buckingham. Muggy hot day, and we were wearing our new all black away shirts, and looked to be suffering in the heat. If memory serves, it was the debut for Oakwell legend Fola Onibuje that day too!
We are ingrained into their history... forever. Didn't we draw that game? I remember it being about 32 degrees and we were wearing black shirts. Conlon could have boiled eggs on his bonce.
I was there I also went afew years later for a 0-0 draw I think Wilson was the MK manager at the time, went on the train and could only get as far as Rugby the rest of the journey was made by coach.
Found a match report for it - not much love for the Dons in this one. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2004/aug/08/match.sport4
'They where cheered on by a traveling army of 1,800 fans' Obviously no such problems of fans boycotting that day
I remember London Tykes making a proper day out of it. I was ridiculed for refusing to go, I remember. Radical.
Hottest i've ever felt at an away game with no back or roof to the stand so you got some shade. Then you had advertising boards facing you so the sun would reflect off them back at you. All soft drinks were sold out by half time so MK went to a local corner shop and started selling cheap foreign branded pop for the same price as the Coca Cola, 7 Up etc that had sold out robbing *******s.
I was there too..Milton Keynes National Hockey Stadium. Straight outside the train station.... What a hot day it was too...
It was also the start of the stupid custom of not allowing football fans into a ground with a drinks bottle with the top ON. On this baking hot day there was an ever increasing pile of confiscated bottles of water on the floor next to the turnstiles. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. All added to the total surreal-ness of the day. And we had BBB as our new number 9. Deep joy!!
You'll not be surprised to learn I was there as I am a reight fan. Can't believe no one has mentioned how hot it was. Scorcher!
