Sidney Crosby - the hottest property in the NHL has signed a 12-year contract extension worth $104Million with the Pittsburgh Penguins - he's been earning that much since he was 20 years old! And we thought that salaries in the Premier League were getting daft.

Very good deal for Sid the Kid but ive never been a fan. Spoilt brat and a bit of a cheap-shotter! Plus he's had a couple of concussions already in his career.

On a different note, is there any news on Cory Sarich? There was some speculation that he might be coming to the uk to play a year with his brother?

I had the priveledge of watching Sid play during the Pens Stanley Cup season and followed his development and career from the draft. Wouldnt ever call him spoilt or a cheap shotter and in fact for the skill levels he has does a great job of defending his own position rather than relying on a enforcer for cover in the days of Marty McSorley.

I dont think Corey will come to the UK and even though his Brother has now settled down in Sheffield it seems to be something thats talked about every pre season. Be great if he did though !!

As for the salarys, great deal, but i find it interesting how the balance of budgets is equal across the league and the trade system relies more on players stature and position than transfer fees. Be good to see a UK lad make the draft but the way the sport is here i cant see it again in my lifetime.

That is about £110k a week if my maths is correct. Not much by PL standards. The 12yrs guaranteeing the money is risky.

You're right with the £110k/week - it's the fact that he will be earning that for 15 years guaranteed that is mind-blowing (plus endorsements). AND he has not proven his fitness since his concussion injuries so indeed it is very risky for the club. If the team does not make the play-offs, the season runs from October to April, then it's not a bad pay-packet. I bet most PL star players would take that, rather than a bumper pay packet for maybe 5 years or so. Some players earn $10million per season for 4 or 5 years but teams have a total salary cap. That means you have superstars on $10Million /year and a whole bunch of grafters on "only" $750k - $1million/year.

*Hot off the press* - literally 5 minutes ago Calgary Flames confirmed they have re-signed Cory Sarich to a 2-year, $2million/year contract extension (Free Agency begins July 1st) - so hes not coming to Sheffield any time soon, I'm afraid. He's one of my favourite defensemen by the way.

When I went to America, I asked my mate if there was anything he wanted bringing back. He said yeah, a Sidney Crosby shirt. My reply was 'Who the **** is Sidney Crosby'? An ice hockey player, plays for Pittsburgh. Ok, I'll get you one.

Those shirts were retailing out there for $70/80. With his name on the back, they were double that and more. When I asked him if he still wanted one, he said no, just get me a baseball cap.

Ho-haha-ho-hum, ha-ha. I can break a mans finger just by looking at him. Don't mess with me. You're way out of your depth.

Bugger! I thought he'd have gone UFA.
For the record I quite like Cory, he's a good hard hitting Dman who can look after himself.
