Just been watching a documentary showing the events of 9/11 and even now, almost 4 years on and after the hundreds and hundreds of times I have seen the same images of the planes hitting the towers...it still shocks me. Just seeing those planes hitting the towers in real time is truly shocking, it makes my heart sink every time I see it. Every time I see those images its as if I'm watching them for the first time.
I remember waking up that morning and turning on the tv and seeing one of the towers burning on every station, then watching live as the second plane hit. And later as the towers fell. Truly shocking then and to this day.

    And then people wonder ....

... why America is still so touchy and defensive about it's security issues.

If that had happened here we'd have all been screaming for the tightest security imaginable. Only now, after a fraction of those casualties were realised here in the recent London debacle do we seem to be appreciating the importance of it all.

"I remember waking up that morning"

Do you always wake up that late? :S

If I remember correctly, it was afternoon and I had just come back home from work...
Anyway... yeah, it was quite shocking to watch it happen in real time. I saw the second plane hitting the tower and just couldn't believe it.

i visited ground zero last year and watched the 2 horizon progs last night

9/11 clear the skies and The fall of the wtc

    Both really good programs.

The day i saw it on tv it was unbelievable but the whole scale of the thing didnt sink in until i visited ground zero last year and got that eerie strange sinking feeling of sorrow as we walked around the side of the church next to wtc. Very hard to describe but it was like soneone flicking a mood switch and it just didnt feel right! I'l never forget it!

When i went up the empire state and looked down and saw just how high up it was i then thought about the wtc and those people that jumped off - bearing in mind the wtc was even higher! I just dont think i could do that but i dont know. Burn or jump??? Watching that again last night and seeing those people hangin out the windows and jumping was very shocking!

Watching it now had a lot more impact than the first time. The first time it just didnt look real on tv! It was like a film. The events in london also hit it home that bit more!

I went this time last year as well

Went to ground zero on the sunday though(12th) didn't feel right going down on the actual day, left it to the families and the new yorkers.Never ever felt so upset in my life than walking round that perimiter fence, flowers & pictures of loved ones attached to it.The pictures of firefighters on the fence were too hard to look at,they had quite a few pieces of card with candles where you could sign your name and leave a message of condolence,i think i wrote "Live Forever from Dan V, S.Yorks"

I first went to NYC exactly a year before and stood on the top of one of those towers,it was amazing,i have never been so high up in all my life on a building, the noise below you could hardly hear, you could see the curvature of the earth! Down a few floors on the restaurant level you could stand in the footwell of the full length windows and gaze down, your first thought was "imagine if you fell from here" Scary to think back when i saw it all happen

When you walked round to the first firehouse that would have responded that day, thats when it really hit you, until then it was just like looking at the foundations of a large building project, but when you saw the flowers/candles outside the firehouse and the names of the full shift that were killed that fateful day,it really left a lump in your throat.

While we were there, everytime a fire engine went hurtling down the street, they would sound the horn and everybody on the street would punch their fist in the air as a salute and cheer them, truley moving.

We went out on the Saturday night(11th) and as were heading down to the meatpacking district, the two bright blue beams of light were shining into the heavens from ground zero in memory of those lost, you can see these on the film 25th hour,a truley magnificent sight, the biggest two fingered salute to bin laden and his repressed cave dwellers everywhere.

New york in the greatest city on earth,it was before and it still is today and will always be,new yorkers are the bravest most resilient people i have seen.

You can't stop the city that never sleeps!

RE: i visited ground zero last year and watched the 2 horizon progs last night

I first visited NY in 1999, went up the Empire State and got loads of pics of the WTC from there and also on a boat trip around Manhattan. I'd walked between the towers and looked up amazed at how high they were. To be honest, I thought they were an eyesore on the sktline...they were just too big and didn't fit in, but now it doesn't look right.

I can still vividly remember 9/11 and exactly how I found out, driving home that evening listening to the radio was surreal, nobody was speeding, cutting up on the motorway or anything - virtually every driver was probably listening to exactly what I was. I got home and put on the TV and couldn't believe it - I called a friend in the States whose sister is a flight attendant with United to check she was ok - when I finally got through it was the sister who answered.

I went again just after the 1st anniversary, took the same boat trip and to look at the pictures side by side brings tears to the eyes.

did you see the guy that walks round there preaching the story

He was in the towers that day but had to leave work early to pick his daughter up i think. He has a pile of pictures and plans etc and his catchphrase is "history, dont let it be mystery!". Will always remember him too. He told me about the church and how not even a single window was blow out even though it is right next to the wtc!! Well weird. Other buildings next to the wtc had to be pulled down but the church didnt even suffer a broken window! Work that out. The buildings blasted outwards as they came down. You can see the scars on the other surrounding buildings. He also pointed out the cross of metal that was found in the wreckage with the piece of plastic on it. That is now a momnument.

All in all though that feeling i got when i walked around the church before i even spotted the wtc area is the thing i will never forget. Such a strong feeling of energy but one of sorrow. It does fetch a lump to your throat and you have to go there to experience it.

    i remember laughing

stuck at work watching skynews thinking "the yanks have finally got their comeuppance". then the 2nd plane hit and i thought "oh christ". Then thought about the death toll and felt like an idiot.

you have to say though that as a terrorist move it was as hard hitting and as unique as you could get. on the flipside the US and the republicans did quite well out of it: conquered 2 countries and were able to set in place even more draconian laws and buy more arms off their big business buddies.

don't think the yanks will get over 11/9 for a long time. not sure we would too but we've had home soil attacked before

    RE: whyw as you laughing

Just remember a good work mate of mine walking over to my desk and in his quietly spoken geordie accent and say I can believe it a plane has flown into the World Trade Center, I was astonished and to be fair i don’t think a great deal of work was done that afternoon. I was hollow when I was the picture.

This year when my wife and walked across to the World Trade Center from the btm of Broadway and saw the site we were both lost for words.

I was also amazed at the lack of security when we went to WTC1 and 2 and into the winter gardens.

As civilised people we must never forget the Barstewards and perpetrators who that attacked us all on that day

Going off on a tangent here, but maybe the feeling of this place will be felt in 50 years time too. I went to Dacau Concentration Camp this year, Jesus Christ, that place was eerie, no birds singing or anything, bear in mind this was August!! The scale of this place was amazing, the closeness to the town was unreal. I cannot really find the words to describe this place as it is well documented what happened there.

    I agree 100%

I visited that place many years ago as a 23 year old, and it gave me nightmares for a good few months afterwards. I don't think anywhere I've visited in my life has left such a profound mark on me like Dachau did. A truly horrible place, and a place I'm so glad I visited.
