Why does everyone think a big target man is the answer? Man Utd, Liverpool, Aston Villa ,Arsenal,Argentina,Spain, Italy,Brazil, Germany, anyone notice a pattern emerging yet!! A striker who can PLAY! is much better than the battering ram type of the striker the fans are craving.I sincerely believe that Simon knows this but he also knows his audience and may cave in to their demands to save his job. Lets hope that football wins the day. Uuuuuuuuuuuu reds

a think at least half of teams you have mentioned there mate have got strikers with a physical presence to be honest, plus we have not obviously got the technical players them world class sides have

Because we aint got any effective partnerships with the midgets - they are all too similar, and we are not effective at holding the ball up to maximise our attacking threat. None of them have lightning pace to get in behind the centre-halves, we rely on their positional sense. We have no outlet to bring it down and hang on to it, or get the knock downs and knock ons in the area.
    Just my view, like.

A fair point Ardsley but we need guile, skill, vision, who would you rathet pay £20 to watch in their prime. Higgy or Conlon/macken/kayode/wright/richards/ etc. I saw a a barnsley striker lose the ball at the ponty end, chase it back to the away end and put it out for a throw in near the corner flag and 90% of the ground cheered.!! We need PLAYERS not athletes. I will always remember Glenn Hoddle being dropped in Mexico for Peter Reid who was more INDUSTRIOUS.
    gi me players anyday.

I don't think anybody is asking for a battering ram carthorse type striker, though. Christ, Odejayi fits that bill - he's definitely not the answer. We need somebody taller and musclier than what we've got, an Iwelumo or Rob Hulse (before his bad injury) type. I'll bet whoever we get next is under 5 foot 10.

Tufftitty on the brandy - it's all gone! :D

Again , stature comes in, i`m not bothered if we keep it on the deck for 90 minutes are you? A goal equals one regardless of how it went in.
Keep it down and the better players will flourish, i promise you that.

No argument with that at all, I just think there lies our problem. We have a bunch of strikers who are similar players but are ineffective as a unit. Any one of what we have would thrive off the bigger partner, particularly Cureton while we have him. I bet Miguel would have, given half the chance. I just can't see a cutting edge at the moment. Apart from the one-off Donny game, when did we last push on at home after scoring? We can't turn the one nil leads into two or three because of it.

Fearless tyke, the game is changing at a fearsome pace. The Bellamys/Agbonlahors will change hands for daft money because if you have ever played, even pub football, pace or Guile is your worst nightmare. I agree entirely with what youre saying but you know Oakwell as well as me and they love a big honest player.
Theres nowt wrong with that but class needs to show as well, thats all i`m saying.

i can see exactly where your coming from, but in some games you need something different some variety, im not asking for a big brick shithouse just someone that we can vary our play with

Thats a fair point, and one that i cant argue with.
But why does it have to be summat different? What causes more confusion than a centre afe being thrown in to the MIX or even a goalie? Muller got his head on one today and it might have gone in but for his Brylcreem. Give me them twisty turny tppes anyday/.

    Fully agree with all that.
Unfortunately for us Odejayi is all we've got with pace up front. The chances of us getting a pair in that fit that bill at a price we can afford are small, so then we either persevere with what we've got or bring somebody in. to get the best out of the likes of Cureton. I think that's why there's a fair few advocating a target man. Personally, I'd take anything that gives us that cutting edge which has blatantly been missing for a few years.

(I used to play left back mainly, so I know only too well how much a pain in the arse pace is. My worst experience was having to mark Stewart Barrowclough in a sunday league game well after he'd retired from pro football. My legs are still twisted now from that day! And I've had to mark Peter Barnes once! Mind you, he was about late forties then!)

Sorry but we need a big target man type...

because not one of our defenders can pass a ball on the deck accurately enough. Therefore they end up launching it long - and at the moment they're launching it long to strikers who don't win anywhere near enough in the air.

We need it as a different option - it doesn't work when Odejayi does it because he just heads it anywhere and can't aim.

Would they launch if midfield or the strikers would have the talent to hold on to it?

I use the term "marked" in perhaps an erroneous way - unless "marked" means "got twisted and turned inside out so that my legs looked like a French plait when he'd done". He played for the Wharncliffe Arms at Carlton, if I remember right. I can still see him now, like a greyhound - ten yards away.....er, twenty yards away....er, thirty yards away....

But on that day you marked Diego MaranBarraclough just like i tried against Gordy Owen its a eyeopener to us terrace dwellers dont you think? Skill, when you have very little is intimidating.

I'd got the skill, I just couldn't get near him!
The pace, the touch, the movement. Different planet to sunday league..................anyway, that's enough about me!!!
    :D

Cheers for the banter, mate. I'm off to beddy byes now. Might go watch Quantum of Colace with the kids tomorrow, so i'd best be off.
