Boston United’s pre-season campaign continued with a 1-1 draw against Championship new boys Barnsley on Wednesday evening.

Barnsley took the lead on 59 minutes through a towering Nicky Wroe header, before Jamie Clarke levelled things up for the Pilgrims with a long-range effort six minutes later, which totally deceived trialist goalkeeper Kyle Letheren, on only moments earlier for Irish international Nick Colgan.

United manager Steve Evans had shuffled his playing options ahead of kick-off, with Mark Greaves and Paul Ellender renewing an old central defensive partnership, while Paul Tait was the man chosen to partner Julian Joachim in attack. New signing Richie Ryan made his first appearance for the Pilgrims following his weekend move from Scnuthorpe United.

Barnsley’s two main summer signings Michael McIndoe and Sam Togwell were both selected from the start and it was the former who tested ex-Tykes’ keeper Andy Marriott with a driven 20-yard free-kick on 10 minutes.
<!--

By this time, Ellender had already seen a shot blocked by Paul Reid, after a Clarke free-kick had been nodded on by Tait.

Chances were few and far between during the first period, although both sides played the ball around well. Brian Howard thrashed a 20-yarder over, while Greaves bulleted a header just wide from a Clarke corner.

Towards half-time, Bobby Hassell produced a last-gasp headed clearance to deny Tait, who looked set to latch on to a pinpoint Joachim centre.

After the interval, which included eight Barnsley changes, the match opened up, with chances aplenty. Substitute Robbie Williams rattled Marriott’s crossbar with a fine, 20-yard free-kick while Dale Tonge saw a low drive gathered by Boston’s keeper following a Martin Devaney cross.

The visitors took the lead on 59 minutes when Williams whipped over a fine left-wing cross and Wroe shrugged off David Galbraith to plant a firm header beyond Marriott’s grasp and into the net.
<!--

The lead lasted just six minutes though and the Pilgrims equalised when a speculative Clarke 30-yarder skewed beyond substitute Letheren, who seemed to misjudge the flight of the ball, just moments after coming on for his first Tykes’ appearance.

Joachim subsequently drilled just wide from a clever Galbraith throughball, while a flowing move involving Joachim, Richie Ryan and Anthony Elding culminated in the latter seeing Letheren gather well from 20 yards.

There were late cameo roles for United scholarship duo Jamie Stevens and Nathan Forbes, but the Pilgrims were indebted to keeper Marriott in the dying throes when he did well to gather Michael Coulson’s downward header at full stretch.

Boston (4-4-2): Marriott; Canoville (Stevens 79), Greaves, Ellender, T Ryan; Green (Elding 68), Clarke, R Ryan, Holland (Galbraith 46); Tait (Forbes 85), Joachim. Subs (not used): Albrighton, Talbot, Kirby (gk).

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.
    "...towering Nicky Wroe header..."

I need a lie down. I'm seeing things.
