Why would any player with only 3 months on his contract want to leave? From a personal perspective and his financial perspective it just doesn't make sense! I've seen figures quoted on here of both the fee & what Sam will be earning now but as I don't know the truth I'm using them only as an example ....but the figures are irrelevant from a business perspective. So if today a team are willing to pay a £500k fee + £20k per week to the player doesn't that mean they will be willing to pay £23k per week with no fee in 3 months? Therefore Sam has done himself out of £500k!! (Or whatever the transfer fee is). So here's my opinion of some possible reasons I see why he could have accepted: 1. He's desperate for an immediate increase in wages that he just can't wait 3 months for! 2. He's not confident in his own ability or feels he's not worth this contract so he's grasping it before it's taken away from him? 3. His agent won't get as much money from a deal that doesn't include a transfer fee so it's him who's advising Sam to have taken it? Possibly maybe Sam was concerned he could get injured in the next 3 months & therefore that was a deciding factor but to me his decision right now from his own perspective just doesn't add up. Confidence in his own ability or just typical rank bad agent advice? Happy if anyone else has any thoughts to why you would accept ...it certainly is a gamble if he's banking on being in the prem next year with the Fowls!
Does anyone really believe he's a Prem striker? Immaterial as I dont believe Wed are a Prem club either. But maybe he realises his own limitations and is taking the offer of big bucks now, they've chucked a 3.5 yr contract at him so even if he sits on the bench at best, he sets himself up for life as unless he asks for a transfer from there, they'll have to pay him off if they move him on.
Theres a lot of snidey comments re "money talks in football", but money talks in life. I like my job, I value my staff and I feel valued by my bosses and have no thoughts of moving, but if a competitor came in and offered me 4x what I'm on I'd be off like a shot. Wouldnt u all?
We're talking about a player who has missed >15 matches through injury in his time here. I think this is the key deciding factor for him. He's setting himself up financially for life, he can't risk it not happening due to an injury in the next 3 months. He supports Arsenal, he's from the West Midlands and owes us nothing. It sticks in the craw that he's joining that lot from S6, but why should it trouble him? He'll remember his time here fondly and we should do the same. He's gone to Wednesday not to be vindictive, but because he had the opportunity. I wish him well, but not the club he's joined.
Your missing the point .... yes I would be off in a shot if I was offered more but if I knew I was worth more in 3 months I'd wait the 3 months!!!!
Spot on. At the end of the day, for Sam it's just a job. It's like if any of us played for Blackburn, and Burnley came knocking with a huge offer. Would we be really be remotely bothered about the rivalry between the clubs, even if we had developed any affinity for them? My second team is Lincoln, I always look out for their result after ours, but if I worked for them in some capacity and S****horpe or Grimsby then offered me more money, I'd be off. These are the best analogies I can come up with right now to explain the situation to anyone accusing Sam of being a "Judas", or anything like that. Sam comes across as a bright and intelligent bloke, and he's made a smart decision that bias aside, most of us in his position would have also made
Yeah still missing the point, forget loyalty and all that I didn't bring that into question .... my personal opinion is he's done himself out of half a million quid by not waiting 3 months!!!
He wants a new challenge. He's already been to Wembley and won twice, he wants to experience what it's like to lose as well.
No I get get your point. I'm saying he was offered a deal now that given his injury history he figured the risk/reward equation pointed to him leaving now. £3.5m or £4m, life changing numbers either way.
If I had the choice of winning the lottery now, or waiting another three months to win it (with say £500k more), I'd certainly want it now. While I'm hoping I don't croak it in the meantime, I'd be incredibly nervous waiting for it. Sam is in a job that could be ended at anytime, so no surprise that he's taken the money now. (The only thing he's done wrong is choose "that club")
Im not missing your point, Im going for option 2 in your original post. Hes grabbing the cash while its there and doung a runner in case it all goes tits up in the next 6 months.
If he had stayed, and ended the season with around 20 goals, then he would probably have been able to have a few clubs bidding for his services, I think/hope Connor goes for this option.
If I was a player I'd be thinking 'I could break my leg and end my career' so you're always going to take what you can at that moment. I doubt he'll pull up any trees at Wednesday, but doubt he'll care, he's set for life. Got nowt against SWFC really, this foreign ownership culture where they are happy to lose money is a cancer of the game.
In effect he's cashing out. If he does well at Wednesday he will be on 18 grand a week. If he had stayed and done well he would probably had offers of 25 grand a week. Must feel he has reached his best.
There's also risk of serious injury. He could have broken his leg at Fulham today.. and then he'd likely never get the chance to earn £20K a week again.
I honestly can't blame him for that. The club now has a chance to see how Bradshaw performs with a run of games. I hope Conor stays until the summer. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
That isn't what has happened though unless Sheffield Wednesday have broken the law. What has happened is Sam winnall has said he wanted to leave, his agent approached clubs and THEN Sheffield Wednesday have made a bid which we accepted and THEN he was offered 4 x his wages. It isn't a competitor coming in and offering you 4x what you're on, it's you hiring somebody specifically to find you a new employer
