Just read through the last few posts in hemsy's F1 thread and saw that Mr C mentioned the separate half's of the garage which made me think of something which i've wondered for a while. Are the pit crew mechanics half and half as well? Aligned to one particular driver but on race days come together to do the pit stops? And if that is the case then what is to stop for example one of Mark Webber's guys from 'accidentally' struggling with a wheel nut when Vettel comes in for a stop? In the after race analysis on Sunday I heard Damon Hill and David Coulthard both admit that they had had team orders when 'they weren't allowed' and that they had acted on them. Do you think the FIA should investigate that as essentially both former drivers have admitted publically to fixing races. Do they still have random weighing of cars? It used to be fairly common for cars to miss out on qualifying chances because they were sat in the pits being weighed but that doesnt seem to happen anymore. In sundays race Pic and Vergne crashed in the pit lane quite early on when nothing else controversial had happened yet the stewards decided to investigate after the race instead of instantly. Any idea why they'd do that? Especially considering it was a pretty cut and dried example of an unsafe release. And lastly (for now) when is the last example of a car being black flagged for being dangerous?
At the top teams each car has a dedicated team of mechanics led by I suppose a chief mechanic. Pit crews will service both cars and are often made up of mechanics and crew who are surplus while the race is on, especially common with smaller teams. There have always been team orders, it is not race fixing. I don't know what they mean by that. Remember in F1, if there is not a rule - it's legal. This is how teams get an edge. All cars are weighed before and after a race, as are the drivers. It's mandatory. Didn't see that, if they can not make a decision, they can't penalise during race - if they get it wrong they bollacks a bloke's race. They can always issue a penalty later, check the F1 blogs. Or there are far bigger grand prix brains on here than me, such as Hemsworth who has been following F1 ever since it went to sky.
F1 is very biased and certain rules have always seemed unclear to me. Yet the outcome of a decision always seems to favour Ferrari. Coincidence?
F1 is a joke One of our engineers used to work for honda , its corrupt as hell I did not know that the lesser drivers pay from bank of mum + dad to get a race
Team orders were definitely allowed when Hill and Herbert were driving, just YouTube Hill at Spa in 98, he effectively gives the order for Ralph Schumacher to back off. They were outlawed for a couple (I think) of years because of the concerns coming out now and that's when we had 'Fernando is faster than you.' To be honest I agree with the situation now, it might detract from the spectacle but its a team sport and they will always find a way to give team orders so may as well allow it.
As much as I love on track battles and duels, the drivers are just the strikers of a larger team effort. They are there to put the ball in the net and get the glory on behalf of everyone whose sole professional purpose is to get a healthy, reliable and competitive car to the grid and hopefully the podium and chequered flag. It goes beyond the drivers, team owners, mechanics, designers, test drivers, marketing, finance, PR - it goes on and on. That is the team and each player's professional success and satisfaction is dependent on the driver bringing the car home in a decent position within the team expectations. If he wins, the team wins. If he goes off at the first corner through driver error, he let's the whole team down. I've seen drivers not being able to face their team after races and mechanics blanking drivers. I bet Seb knows how that feels today.
