What is the absolute minimum number of points that it is possible to stay up on in a standard season (24 teams)?

What is the minimum points that it is possible to get into the play-offs on?

What is the maximum points that you can be relegated on?

And what is the maximum that you can miss out on the play-offs on?

I've no idea how to work any of those out

The first one, it wouldn't matter how many teams are in the division, you'd just have to finish above 3.
I think you could do it with 6 points, draw home and away against 3 other teams and they don't get more than another 4 draws.

Maybe could do with 5 points, win and lose against one of bottom 3, draw and lose against other 2, if those 3 lose remaining games.

minimum to stay up = 7 points

Three teams at bottom all draw against each other home and away therfore would be on four points if they lost every other game. However by virtue of you beating these three teams you would be on 18 points if lost all your other games. So say if you drew against all these other 3 teams then they would be on 6 points and you would have to draw one other game to stay up.

But if they lost every other game...

...surely that would mean you'd got 18 points from them.

RE: minimum to stay up = 5 points

That would mean you'd beaten each of them twice though so you'd have 18 points!

You wouldn't need another point if finished with better GD

No, scrub the 5 point one

not taking into account them playing each other, I'll stick with 6.

I will revise to 6 on goals scored

If all teams at bottom drew against each other then woul dnot get better goal difference, could do it on 6 points with more goals scored than opposition.

I think the minimum to get into the play-offs would be 46 points. Everybody draws every match and you're placed by goals scored.

maximum relegated with - 69 points

If all teams win half their games then all teams would have 69 points. Therefore it would go down to goal difference on who goes up and who goes down.

    Heh heh.

You can do it on goals scored. Yours are score draws and the rest are no score draws.

    ... and kind of right.

You could do it on goal difference on the results against all other teams so you would have less heavy defeats.

I think you can miss out on playoffs on 102 points.

    1 win 46games

    2 win 44 games

    3 win 42 pames

    4 win 40 games

    5 win 38 games

    6 win 36 games = 108 points

    7 win 34 games = 102 points
