I get ( like match highlights) they can’t cover everything but at least report parts of the game that were influential in effecting things. it doesn’t cover the push on Cosgrove that should’ve resulted in a free-kick deep in their half, instead they go up the pitch and get a penalty
I think the main points that were bang on was before the 2nd goal we were well on top created lots, after the 2nd goal goals in we sat back invited pressure and tried to hold on to the lead creating nothing. We can go on about refs forever we have no control over them. But next time we have a 2 goal advantage I'd think twice before putting everyman behind the ball and defending it.
I’m not on about the tactics or how we played, I was simply replying to the title of the thread about the quality (or not) of the report. They do it on tv highlights as well. In a limited time or space you’d think they’d want to include all the main incidents in the game the, often they don’t.
I don't know why we sit back to defend a lead. We can't do it, never have. Not just this side, we haven't been able to do it for decades.
Agree mate. In Chris Wilders first stint as Blunts manager, his side played a similar 3.5.2 formation as we do now with centre backs licensed to go forward. Even when 2 or 3 goals up, or even when they went down to 10 his philosophy was to attack rather then defend . This got them promoted from league 1 through to premiership and staying there. Not sure Collins has the same philosophy. His personality come across as someone that would err on the side of caution, a keep what we have attitude, rather than go for more
I dont always get this "we sat back" In my opinion Bolton were getting no joy playing on the deck passing football so they went long ball by passing our midfield. We coped pretty well with there long ball tactics but as we know in football fine measures come into play and a goal can be scored or prevented in a split second. For example foul given to Cosgrove we win 2-1.Frustrating but thats the joy and despair of football.
we didn't try to keep possession. Roberts long kicking isn't good enough. Prem goalies are passing it out upfield to a team mate. All that happened 99% of the time on Sat was the ball coming back as the Bolton back line received the ball. Our front two hardly won a header so why persist in the tactic
I posted after Tuesday that when we went 2 up I thought we invited pressure then to take a striker off for a midfielder was another negative sub that changed the formation to soak up pressure. I got told it was just Bolton been a good side and not us inviting pressure trying to defend the lead. They did go long and try win the 2nd balls which they did but even when we cleared the lines the ball just came straight back. Not a dig at Collins he has grown on me and done well to get us where we are but next time I wouldn't try soak the pressure up and defend the lead.
I also remember the stendel season (ok a different set of players) but he would have never defended a 2 goal lead.
Arguably the best I've seen us was under Stendel, Wilson and Basset they never stopped trying to attack, that's a fact.
