I enjoyed watching England play, which is unusual when we lose (or win for that matter!) as we're generally **** or decidedly average.

At least we actually played some decent stuff and were easy on the eye. No hacking it up front, some people prepared to run with the balland give it a go. Sadly we've looked poor at both full backs and at set pieces in the first half which ultimately cost us.

I thought the same. I don't think I can fault anyone though we played as well as we could just not good enough at the back
not sure what to do about the full backs

Some big pluses with the youngsters Rooney was as usual a total diasappointment. I'd drop him for the Uraguay game but I don't think Roy will do it

I don't think so if we can perform like that against the other two teams. Fair play to Hodgson, he picked am attacking team, young players and they gave it a go. Missed Sturridge when he went off, final ball poor but at least I wasn't shouting at the tv and wondering why I'm bothering watching.

I quite enjoyed the match and I rarely think that about England. At least we weren't anti football trying to lump it up front. Lots of good movement. Defending for second goal poor and defending overall not great but Sterling looked lively. Time to think about Rooney's place in the team. If you're going to play him you've got to play him in his position.

Good and bad. We looked a decent team at times, but fragile at the back. When Italy were trying to score we looked every bit as good as them if not better. Once they took the lead and sat back we didn't have enough to break them down. Italy are a good defensive side, they love to soak up pressure, but we didn't trouble them enough.

Wayne Rooney provided a brilliant cross for the goal. Real quality. Other than that, he let us down again as he often does in tournament football. Ball played in to feet, 10 yards from goal, and he missed the target. Even the very best miss those from time to time. But Rooney has never scored a world cup goal. It's not that he misses from time to time, he misses every time. Shearer or Lineker would have scored that. I'm not talking about when they were in their pomp, if they were plucked out of the studio tonight, given a pair of shorts and put in that position either one of them would have broken net.

Only thing I can moan about is Rooney and Gerrard being pretty anonymous, arguably our two best players.

I thought both full backs were poor, but had little ahead of them to help their cause.

No idea what the defence were doing for the second Italian goal. But to be fair, both goals were made by genius. Pirlo letting it through him, and Candreva switching before putting in the umpteenth dream cross which Balotelli finally put away.

Gerrard slowed us down awfully. Rooney - great assist apart - was standard Rooney for England.

I thought Sturridge, Welbeck, Sterling and Henderson did well, especially the Liverpool lads.

But it was crying out for Rooney off, Lambert on. And if Barkley was replacing anybody it was Gerrard.

Roy obviously thought otherwise and fair enough. But fair enough of me to say I thought we threw away a point at least because of it. Had anybody but Rooney had that sitter, I'd have backed them. Truly awful miss. He's about as world class as every other England player.

The freak Costa Coffee victory gives us hope going into the next two games, but seriously, it's as expected. I thought we'd fail to get out of the group, and stood no chance of doing owt impressive. Well... saw nowt tonight to alter that opinion.

Gutted. Was optimistic as ever pre match.

Ah well. I support Tarn. Same old.

Gonna have to disagree about that bit of it Jay. In their pomp yes, but nowadays they wouldn't even last 20 minutes - never mind last until the 2nd half to put in a chance like that. I know you'tre (probably) only joking, but you're wrong.

I think the opposite actually. Costa Rica look favourites to qualify with Italy now (obviously) & Uruguay will come out fighting (not literally) next game v England. Therefore it's gonna be more of a crunch game than ever - loser goes home. England will crumble - as always. If ITA v CR play for a draw then thats the other two teams stuffed basically. I know the winner of the URU v ENG game can still qualify with two wins - but I can't see that scenario happening
