Oakwell old boy is quick to make his mark BARNSLEY won't forget Andy Liddell nor vice-versa. The 32-year-old returns to Oakwell tomorrow with Oldham Athletic, stirring a host of good memories and one not so happy for Barnsley supporters. Three years ago, it took him less than two minutes to get a goal against his former employers. "I have played back at Barnsley before with Wigan and was lucky enough to score after 60 seconds," he recalled. "It would be nice to do that again." Liddell's goal set Wigan on their way to a 3-1 win. He added: "I got a brilliant reception there (at Barnsley) which was very nice because I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club. "It was a special period in their history because we reached the Premiership and the players and fans got to visit all those great grounds. We made a lot of friends as a club and a team. "I think that season shows what a good football club can do for an area." Liddell had a brief spell as Sheffield United before joining Oldham, where he is this season's top scorer with four to his credit. Oldham scored twice on Wednesday at Port Vale but were held to a 2-2 draw as Christopher Cornes got two goals, netting his second in the 90th minute. Luke Beckett and Chris Killen were on target for Oldham and as a pair are manager Ronnie Moore's preferred strikeforce. Injuries and suspensions have meant that stretching back to last season they have played only 10 times together but over that spell they have hit 12 goals between them. Killen could miss tomorrow's game with an achilles problem. Moore, who was linked with Barnsley as a successor to Paul Hart before Andy Ritchie landed the job, will have to change his team from midweek. Midfield player Mark Bonner broke his arm in a collision with teammate Rob Scott at Port Vale. Richard Butcher is set to continue as his understudy tomorrow. simon.meeks@sheffieldnewspapers.co.uk 30 September 2005 « Previous PageNext »Page 1 of 1
not good enough for us apparantly, remember wigan at home?,ran us ragged, wouldnt be surprised of a repeat perfomance tommorow.
Wasn’t good enough, at the time we sold him, which isnt the same as not being good enough We had WARD, Floorcloth, Hristov at the time, Liddell needed a move at that stage of his career
I'd agree with that Trouble is, Ward and Fjortoft were sold within a couple of months while Hristov did his cruciate and was out for the season. While Liddell may have been behind those in the pecking order he was at least as good if not better than his replacements Dyer and Sheron who cost the club almost £2 million in transfer fees and christ knows what in wages.
Apparently he has a tendency to put his hat on wrong! ff He was a fashion leader though - years after that and kids are all putting their hat on back to front!
