It's a strange question but there is a point to it, I need a name for an event we've planned and it needs to be a catchy name but with a local twist. I've come up with a few different ideas but I thought i'd tap into the BBSers local knowledge and try and pick something out.

I need to know names for the different parts of a coal mine/pit and especially local slang for parts of the mine/pit too. Even names of anything linked with a coal mine, different tools, jobs, place names.

    Stuff like:

    The more weird the better.

Call your event the 'Swaithe Main Explosion'

    google it up....

if your event is in Barnsley or..... Wombwell Main, Barnsley Main, Skiers Main Woolley Mai.... etc...

even if their was no pit...... like Cawthorne Main Explosion.....

other words I like are.... Main Gate Ripper

and Levytag, sometimes Levythag, the pit at Stainborough

DJ Fatty Boy.. some Mining terms for you

Maingate.. Road that led to one end of the coalface and carried air into in
Tailgate.. Road from the other end of the coal face that carried air/dust away from it.
Boxhole.. Underground office where officials completed their shift reports and handed over to the next shift.
    Drift., Incline/decline in the road.
Paddy house.. where the Transport Engine and the driver for the underground train were housed.
Packhole.. either end of the coalface that was supported with timber.

    there are many more..
I believe the local band XRippers took their name from pit jobs.. ie Maingate and Tailgate Rippers. These people were responsible for advancing the roadways as the Coalface advanced. This process was replaced by the more productive retreat mining system.
I could really write a book about this but just don't have the time.

RE: "Pigs ears gone on the blue boy"

It means a sprocket tooth has broken on the tail gate mini-conveyor.
