does anyone remember when the Ponty End was all standing, there was a guy who stood just to the right of the goals, he always had a shirt on unbuttoned halfway down whatever the weather and had a cockney accent.... who was he and why was he supporting the Reds...???
I think I remember who you mean. He owned a second hand furniture shop at the bottom of Racecommon Road called, if I remember correctly, Charisma Antiques. He once went beserk at a mate of mine for swearing, grabbed hold of him and ripped his jacket. The mate went and fetched a copper and the guy ended up giving him a tenner in compensation. Very funny at the time....
I think the guy you mean is John Simmons or Simonds he used to be the manager of the civic in the 60's and 70's and was responsible for starting the teen and twenty club which in turn led to some decent live bands appearing there. Has lived and still does to my knowledge in the town for ages and has supported the reds for most of that time, I think I saw him at Oakwell last year so I assume he still supports the reds.
Back then I knew a guy that drank in the same pub as me..... I was perhaps 18 - 19 he was late 30's and his name was Derek or Del to all that new him, he was a bus driver and I think he frequented Oakwell, sadly he's dead now cancer took him some years ago, really strong cockerny accent, could have been him.
what a legend, he was there wind rain hail shine, with his shirt unbottoned.... looks like the kind of guy who wouldnt take no crap....
RE: one micky butler Thats him same guy, started that shop after he finished at the civic. Dunt know him like, just know of him from his time at the civic.
RE: one micky butler I sat on a crush barrier just behind him.....how the **** I sat on one of those things for 90mins is beyond me.... we then used to sneak over the wall at the bottom corner into the paddock for the second half.... this was when i was too big to climb over the wall at the back of the paddock and hide in the bogs until the turnstyles opened...... ahhhh happy days......
