as far as i remember it was the Queens Ground, or Queenie. just grass with like a wierd hill around two sides which folk used to ride on motorbikes or bmx's.

having said that, i'm only 32 like. although i do know there were plans for a swimming pool up there for decades, just never got off the ground

It was just an open field mate....

It had a ridge running around the outside of it,

I played on there for years as my Grandad had an allotment just behind there...

Remember watching the cricket from the East Upper was often more entertaining!

Also remember a football match being played on those fields and a goal was scored and a big cheer went up from the East Upper - the players in teh Barnsley match looked up wondering what was happening as the game had been pretty boring!

I remember the pox doctors clinic.I went in there BY MISTAKE. I had my vasectomy in the same building. Though initially i went through the wrong internal door. A nurse 5ft tall and the same width asked me for my Number. It was then i saw a picture on the wall of what can best be discribed as a Rotting knob.I then beat a retreat into the right room.

  18. You are ALL missing something - the GREYHOUND STADIUM

Looking up from where the Academy is now there was a really steep hill which was criss crossed with footpaths, brambles, ferns, that kind of stuff. At the very top of that was a sort of sunken plateau, quite a big circular area. I remember in the early 60s there was the remains of a brick structure (I think) which would have been the old scoreboard and possibly stadium offices. I have no idea when greyhound racing ceased there, but it was definitely a track. Used to play up there and on that hill a lot. Good place to explore, with paths running round the back of the training ground and down the hill to the canal. Green and slimy in those days, not been down for a long time. Is it navigable yet I wonder? Always thought it was a shame that it got so derelict.

    RE: Yep Queens ground

I was as told in the 70s by an old old timer who I worked with that the Queens ground use to have a grass athletic track marked out on it.

I'm not sure about this but I think someone started to develop it into a Dog Track but for some reason it wasn't completed, hence the bankings.

The land behind the North Stand where the Academy is was the the Coop sports ground.

The old Barnsley Road Runners club had it's HQ there. We trained on Tuesday and Thursday nights. We also had a 5 mile race wherewe did 3 laps of the field and then ran out onto Grove Street to Cundy Cross then on Rotherham Road and down to Wakey Road and then up Harbrough Hill. We called races like that Classics.

See my bit posted just before yours. That rings a bell about the dog track being planned, but not completed. The plateau, at the top of the hill was sunken in amphitheatre style so they obviously got some way towards developing it as a stadium but maybe it was never finished. It definitely was going to be a dog track though, even if it never happened.
