Following the other thread on religion it got me thinking. This isn't a thread to debate the rights or wrongs of religion or to have a go at anyone for their beliefs it is simply to see how people think. For people like madmark and biglil I know that religion has really helped them so here's a question to them (and others). If somebody could show you irrefutable proof that god doesn't exist and that it is all essentially made up would you want to know the truth or would you prefer to live the rest of your life still believing with no idea at all that this proof has been found? I suppose the same could be asked the other way round. Would somebody who doesn't believe prefer to live their life not believing or see hard concrete proof that it is all real? Any thoughts?
How do you actually prove the non-existence of something though? You can't provide evidence that god doesn't exist, all you can do is come up with a lack of evidence to prove he does. You are trying to prove a negative.
Im not trying to prove anything at all it was hypothetical. Although I suppose technically whilst it would be proving a negative would it not also be proving a positive in that it would be proving somebody lied which is possible to do.
Sorry, old mate, but you've got me wrong on this issue. Although brought up as a Catholic, I'm not a religious person (this means that our old priest would probably label me as 'lapsed'!). I simply respect others who hold differing opinions to myself, provided they reciprocate.
No worries, buddy. It also explains why I can't answer your original question. How does that old saying go? I'm about as much use as a chocolate fire guard!
