This number 02983680545 is used by a W*N**R claiming your computer has been corrupted. He/she will then say that your computer has a virus that has infected your hard-drive, then he/she will asks for you to let them have access to your computer to fix the virus/problems you have. I think this has been posted on here before.
If they get access to your computer, they will jam it with viruses & they will charge you stupid money to virus scan you computer.

I like those nice scammers. I aim to keep them online for 10-15 minutes while I stare out of the window making it up as I go along...

Anyone who phones me up and tells me I have a virus on my computer, I tell them I haven't even got a computer so they're talking ******.
Can't really believe anyone would still fall for this scam.

I've had it a few times, they usually say they are calling from Microsoft, this flagged it as a hoax straightaway as I'm a Mac user. I had fun with the last one, an African guy, I strung him along for a hell of a long time then started coming onto him and asking if he liked sleeping with men at which point he told me I was an evil man and would burn in hell before hanging up on me. On another occasion my wife told the caller she couldn't turn the computer on as I would beat her if she did - again they hung up.

But if I don't pay them how will I get rid of the viruses?

I did that and then the bloke said "then you can't have your banana!"
I said "did you say banana?"
He said "Yes, because you are a monkey" and then hung up!
    Surreal!

You won,t you will have to wipe your computer and start again.
I fell for a similar scam a couple of years ago. Made out they were Microsoft. They shagged my computer after I refused to pay 90 quid. I changed all my passwords and any money references. They were quite convincing. Nowadays it is on your bike time.

They ask you to go to a web page and download a webex type app which allows them to remotely control your PC.

I've had a few before, had them on phone for ages. Just go along and when they ask you to open Internet Explorer, say you use Safari, play really stupid and then say your using an iPad. Proper throws them off their script.

Also, ask who the company it is they work for. You get the impression it's Microsoft, but when pressed they make up some bumf about 'We're calling from Windows'

If you have outside assist enabled on you router, they'll ask you for your router password, I assume.

A friend of a friend fell for it and her computer was riddled with viruses. However, with a bit of help we managed to clean everything up, although it took a couple of days. Very rarely would it be necessary to wipe everything and start again.

Ha ha but sorry it really was a friend of a friend! Having worked over 30 years in the industry I honestly didn't fall for it myself - I helped clean up the mess afterwards.

Re: " I helped clean up the mess afterwards. "

My girlfriends Grandma fell for this scam. They had access to her only account (admin account) and changed the passwords. Then they rang her and told her "if you want to see any of the pictures or documents on your hard drive again, it'll be £300".

She was devastated! Her husband died a few years ago, and that was the only backup she had of loads of photos of them both.

I took it upon myself to try and get around the admin controls, but if you can't log in, then you can't reset the password. It looked like her hard drive was going to be wiped, but I found a boot up file which I put on a memory stick, which allowed me to delete all admin passwords using the BIOS. :)

    Set er' B*stards though!

Re: " I helped clean up the mess afterwards. "

That's roughly what we did - we made a boot CD complete with virus checker, malware and spyware checker etc. We managed to get al the photos and documents and whatever off the hard drive onto a memory stick first, then we got rid of the infestation that they'd put on it. It was an oldish laptop so it still had a DVD drive, but the procedure would work equally well with a memory stick.
