cambstyke posted earlier about the fate of some of our Academy players here:- http://www.barnsley.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=339842 Tells me everything that's wrong about football in this country. We give someone a rolling yearly contract and then let him decide who we do or don't keep from the youth team!! Talk about brainless. Most managers do not last more than 2 years in the job, go check the stats, its a blooming miracle for any club to keep their manager for 2+ years. Yet, when a manager is appointed the club give them full control of the transfer budget and more then often control of who runs the academy even!! They subsequently replace all the current staff with their mates and buy a bunch of players on 3 year+ contracts, and employ new scouts. They then slowly but surely replace all the players the last dictator, sorry manager, bought at a loss and so the merry-go-round continues. Yet, you suggest that there should be a football director who is in charge of the Youth team development and recruitment regardless of the manager and its like you've suggested necrophilia to the established footballing "wisdom" that the manager should take charge of team management and running the club.
You make a very good point, Wakey. This transition from Academy to first team seems to happen at a lot of clubs, but we have produced few players recently who have done this. Butterfield and Stones have made the transition, but youngsters such as Rose, Digby and Noble-Lazarus seem to have gone backwards in their development. But obviously we do not see them week in, week out, and some of the U21 games haven't exactly seemed to be of a very high standard (the Leeds cup game was dire football first half!).
