I remember that road being built so it's obviously not that old, weird how we've come to rely on it so much, using Agnes Road and the streets beyond as a detour has not been fun having to give way to another car every ten yards due to parked cars.
Nalgo / Unison offices opposite the church and baths cos my mum used to work there. Basically cut a valley in the hill.
I'd say about 1990ish, nowt major knocked down for it but a couple of streets carried on up from Wellington Street which is why you now have Castlereagh Street and Lower Castlereagh Street for example.
6:14 on this video it looks like it's nearing completion so 1991 according to Dave Cherry.
I'm not sure why but I always figured it was a lot earlier than that even though I was alive and should have remembered
It's funny what you remember, I remember seeing it near completion when I was in the car with my step dad late on a Saturday night going to India Gardens to pick an Indian up...parked in the car park behind Corner Pin and there was a group of lasses having a p*ss against the wall...I'm pretty sure the boozers 10 yard away had toilets back then, they did 6 or 7 years later when I started going out anyway.
We moved onto Castlereagh St in late 94 and it had been there a while then. I think I only went to the Alabama Aligator a couple of times before that was shut to make way, so probably 89-90ish.
Thanks for that. I was 4 when the original video was filmed so to me growing up that's how town always was. I moved away to uni 10 years ago so the older video reminds me more of town than the modern video does.
