just checked, our archers used to have their fingers cut off if caught by the french... to show the knights they could still fire their arrows at them, the brave English archers used to give them the V sign saying...youre having it mate, here are some arrows, cos i can still fire my bow!
that's a myth not sure how it actually came about but I have read several times that this is a myth - not sure where though before you ask S)
According to Desmond Morris Its a phallic gesture (aren’t they all) based on the fingers representing legs, with a bit of thumb (the phallic bit) being visible between the legs. That certainly more universal an explanation than the archery one.
