Eddie Haigh (non contract) 22. Danny Free (yr2) Manchester City are the current holders of the youth cup, so I was expecting a good side, so it came as no surprise when they openned up the Reds defense with good passing and movement almost from the first whistle. However, after 30 minutes, the Barnsley keeper had still to make his first save, although City had carved out at least 5 clear chance, a couple of which I am confident even I would have scored. At the other end, with 15 minutes gone, Tyrone Crapper had won a free kick 25 yards out and Jamil Adam had scored past an unsighted keeper. City equalised on 37 minutes when Alex Nimely-Tchuimeni (try saying that after.... no just try saying that) volleyed home from the edge of the box after a poor defensive header out from a free kick on the city left. Miraculuosly, the teams went in level at half time. City went in front from another free kick on 48 minutes. The City bench shouted on that the enormous centre-half was marked by a full back at the far post. After that, all that was required was an accurate delivery and Dedryck Boyata made it 1-2. The goal was the signal for Fearnehough and Reffin to be replaced by Scargill and Haigh, but five minutes later, with City now well on top as the Barnsley younsters faded in the hot sun, City midfielder Tutte was allowed time and space at the edge of the box to bend the ball past Rusling and into the top corner. Boyata scored again as the Reds failed to deal with yet another set piece and the big centre half completed his hatrick after he scored with a penalty awarded after Mellor brought down Ahmed Benali. By now City were playing freely and were totally dominant, hitting the woodwork on 3 occasions. Only Tyrone Crapper worked tirelessly to stop the rot as elsewhere heads went down. The ref should have stopped the contest before the final goal by Christopher Chantler in the 84th minute. Mention must be made of a reckless foul by Eddie Haigh which earned him a booking that might have been more and the defence of the indefensible by the home bench. Mention must also be made of the gamesmanship of the city players that was actively encouraged by the City bench. Neither set of coaches can be happy that they have encouraged good habits in young professionals. Those who think the first team are bad should note the academy record of played 5, won 0, drawn 1, lost 4, for 5 (Adam has scored 4), against 18, points 1. I gained the impression that the team provided the coaching staff with a ready made excuse when the heavy defeat arrived. The line will be, we lost but we were a very young side, and that is true. But why, in the circumstances would you pick a young lad in goal for his first game and leave a bigger more experienced lad (Danny Free) on the bench. What good will a heavy beating do him. That said, most of the defence is out of its depth at the moment and it is hard to see a future in football for some of those lads. MotM: Tyrone Crapper who continued to try to keep the ship afloat in midfield as heads went down
Said it before we wont get anywhere with the present coaching staff at the accademy,Barnsley in need of a clear out at all management levels.
RE: good report, thanx again m8 sorry but crapper was always out of position not saying he didnt work hard but left a hugh hole everytime he made a challenge the team is all bluster trying to hard and not playing with there heads enough skill but not allowed to think for themselves
RE: cheers..... and... I'm afraid the game pretty much passed him by. He was the first player substituted. I was wondering if he was one of the lads that played in the reserves game against Rochdale because frankly nothing went right for him. Potentially, he could be almost 3 years younger than some of the opposition. I do not know their ages, but some City supporters behind me were commenting on how small we were.

B*ll*cks 8. Tyrone Crapper (yr1) 9. Reuben Noble-Lazarus (u16) That's not a report - you're just making up daft names.
Get behind em! Even though they are **** and badly managed. Or does that only apply to the first team?
I hate to see the gloss which is put on poor performances by management teams. This applies equally to first team games as it does to the academy. It might work if I was not at the match, but if I was there, I take it as an attempt to insult my intelligence. Why can't they just be honest. For example, 1-5 at half time would have been a fairer example of the balance of chances created in the first half and yet the impression is given that 1-1 reflected the balance of the game. In fairness, Branson is pinching money. I have been watching the academy for 5 years and it has got gradually worse. Its function is to produce young footballers capable of playing for the first team. Although I believe passionately that we should have an academy, I find it impossible to justify on past results. However, my answer to this problem would not be the same as most. My view is that we need to improve the coaching staff and investigate why Barnsley schools football does not produce good talent as it once did.
RE: In summary, therefore Cynical one-liners are easy. Solutions are harder. I do not agree that we should scrap the academy. I think that we should try to improve it. The first step would be improving coaching staff but I would also like to know why the flow of promising young footballers from Barnsley schools has apparently stopped.
RE: Get behind em! Are you basing your views purely on results, or have you been to see them train over an extended period?
Has anyone asked any of the youngsters what they feel about their Oakwell experience?
Is the coaching and management really that bad?
These lads are very young and we don't seem to have many 3rd year lads on the books.
If my memory serves me right the usual pattern for the Academy is that they lose most of their games up to Christmas and then they start to pick up points in the New Year.
The majority of the side are only a couple of months into a 3 year course. You can't expect them to beat the Youth Champions at this stage of their development.
Do you think we should change or Academy status to a Centre of Excellence?
Would there be any benefit in doing that?

RE: In summary, therefore That is an excellent question. You'd have to ask a few parents of kids that have gone along for trials etc in my opinion.
