Reffin (yr1) 16. Tienan (yr1) After a bad defeat (1-4) last week at Notts Forest, the lads would have wanted to get their season back on track. They started with just 1 forward and Crapper playing just ahead of the back four. However, without Adam or Lazarus in the squad, things did not look hopeful. And so it proved as early as the 13th minute when Branson fell over allowing the Sunderland #10 to run through unopposed to score easily. However, 3 minutes later, the Sunderland #5 was guilty of an equally horrendous error as he placed a pass 3 yards wide of his keeper from only 10 yards away and Watts ran on to score an equaliser in an unattended net. Just 6 minutes before half time, Sunderland took the lead again when #10 beat the Reds keeper to a cross from the left to score with a header. At half-time, the Reds took off their best player of the first half (Mellor) and brought on a second forward (Bennett) and opted for a midfield diamond. The space on the wings this allowed Sunderland was exploited all the second half by their #9 up against Barnsley left back Scargill. They went further ahead on 50 minutes when they won the ball at the edge of the Reds box and the ball fell again to their #10 who rolled the ball past the keeper's right hand and into the corner of the net for his hattrick. The Reds tried hard after that but simply earned themselves bookings for their pains for Taylor, Scargill and Watts. Taylor especially earned minus points for a dreadful tackle that rightly earned him an early substitution and bollocking from Simon Davey who had just arrived to witness it. Kevin Ball, who was in charge for Sunderland found time to keep home supporters amused... it was that easy. Our only consolation was that it was a very young Barnsley team. MotM for Barnsley Mellor (even though he went off at half time)
