Bizarre?

Would the other way round make sense?

RE: Bizarre?

If the point of our Academy is just to bolster Tamworth's defence then we may as well shut the fcker. We seem unwilling to put Academy lads in the 1st XI - Atkinson's been put in when there was no other option and imho hasn't let anyone down. Had Reid stayed fir for example, Atkinson would have been nowhere near the first team and nobody would know if he could cut it or not.

If we're going to invest time and money in these lads, get them in the first team rather than just discard them with impunity.

I would have atleast tried one of the many forwards we have produced in the team / squad.

Exactly. We can only speculate on Joynes et al. My betting is we'll keep him on the books til he's 22/23, then let him go for nowt to Chester where he'll come good and end up playing in the Championship regularly.

What about Coulson??? He seems to be mentioned each week the reserves play. Personally not seen him because not gone to the cup games.

Saw him pre season and in noddy cup v MK Dons. Good control, looked pacey but was played in midfield so dunno what he's like as a forward.

Hope lads like him aren't cast aside.

I agree, they need to be blooded.

If they are good enough they are old enough. Who needs experience nowadays anyway?

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

That's because Premiership sides get the good Academy players, whereas we pick up the ones they don't want.

The Academy lads have been sent out for one reason and one reason alone.
That is simply to find if they can play at that level.
If they can't it's hardly likely they will ever be able to make it in the Championship.

Wrong

the academy players are sent out to gain experience

not to see if they can play at conference level

When Jarman matures a bit I believe he will be a very good player well capable of playing at Championship level

Like someone said though...

no doubt he'll be released and find his way back up and do well at this level with another club. happens time after time with us it would seem.

So you think being able to play at that level isn't important?

They could have stayed at Oakwell and gained experience in the Reserves.
If you think their future in the game isn't in some way going to be dependent on how well they perform whilst on loan I can only say with the utmost respect you are being a little nieve.

You cant gain 1st team experience in the reserves. Its not competitive enough. Hence why Man Utd have sent Eckersley out on loan to us.

There's a lot more of our ex-academy players playing semi pro and Sunday League than there ever was made it at this of a higher level.

There are few who have been released who did have a reasonable pro career but they have been very thin on the ground. In recent years most of the Academy players seemed to turn out for AFC Barnsley.

By definition no.
But I think you are missing my point.
I agree they are there for experience but I don't think they will be at our club long if they can't cut it at that level.
If they are in their last year with the Academy they would be no use to us if they haven't the ability to play in the Conference.
If they were 16-17 year olds then I would accept your view.
